The yell can best be described as a "Mmmmm-ann-gann-niii" sound that gradually rises ever higher in pitch. Elmo Lincoln recreated his victory cry in a 1952 episode of You Asked for It. Tarzan's yell is used as a melodic refrain in the Baltimora single Tarzan Boy.
Tarzan the Ape Man: Egow, not umgowa, is the word you hear when you watch this movie. Tarzan abducts Jane and takes her high into a tree, then uses the command egow to drive away a curious ape. Later, while Tarzan is tearing up Jane's handkerchief out of curiosity, he also tells a chimp to egow.
In later films the fake ears were abandoned altogether figuring no one would know the difference. Tarzan's distinctive call was either created by sound recordist Douglas Shearer from various sounds, or it was indeed Johnny Weissmuller doing the yell himself.
