Originally, Terk was going to be a male like in the books but was changed to a female after Rosie O'Donnell's audition. Coincidentally, Chris Rock was offered the role of Terk, but turned it down. In the musical, like in the books, Terk is portrayed as a male (originally portrayed by Chester Gregory) and he is a tenor.
The film made the Mangani tribe a family group of gorillas, with Kerchak a silverback gorilla (mature male) head of the family and mate to Tarzan's adoptive mother, Kala. He is essentially a combination of two of the novel's ape characters, Kerchak and Tublat, Kala's mate in Burroughs's original story.
Trivia. Sabor is classified as a female leopard. However, Jiminy Cricket's journal entry in Kingdom Hearts infamously got Sabor's gender wrong, referring to her as a "he", meaning that Sabor is a male in the game and a female in the movie. The film's DVD commentary also referred to Sabor as male.

When Sabor spots the Baby, she begins chasing him; the Baby Gorilla tries to race back to his parents but Sabor kills and eats him. Kerchak and Kala hear their son's cries and race to try to protect him, but are too late, so Kala cries sadly in Kerchak's arms at the loss of her only child.
Cheeta (sometimes billed as Cheetah, Cheta, and Chita) is a chimpanzee character that appeared in numerous Hollywood Tarzan films of the 1930s–1960s, as well as the 1966–1968 television series, as the ape sidekick of the title character, Tarzan.
