Summary: Chapter 14Katniss films propos and visits wounded members of the rebellion, formerly enslaved stonecutters of District 2. Katniss regains her strength, living aboveground, and processes what Snow did to Peeta.
Katniss looks up and sees that Rue is pointing to a wasp's nest higher up. Katniss thinks it is probably a tracker jacker nest. Trackers jackers are another mutation created by the Capitol during the war with the districts. They will follow anything that disturbs them and try to kill it.
Plutarch tells Katniss that Prim came up with the idea of conditioning Peeta in the opposite direction: giving him calming drugs like morphling whenever Katniss is brought up. This measure has mixed success—it makes Peeta extremely confused, but also mitigates his fear.
Haymitch speaks to Katniss again and updates her on Peeta. Peeta's remembered, positively (yahoo!), an encounter with Katniss's father. Her father sang "The Hanging Tree," the same song she sang to the mockingjays. Outside, the battle continues, and Katniss wishes for the old Peeta.
In chapter 14 of Mockingjay, Gale embraces katniss to kiss her, she kisses Gale back, not because of desire but because she feels like she owes him these kisses and she's lonely.
Peeta thanks Katniss for finding him and she says that he would have done the same. He talks about what Katniss should do if he doesn't make it back. She's worried that he might die, and to keep him from speaking of such things, she kisses him. It's her first kiss.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
The gift of ointment also restores her faith in Haymitch. She no longer feels alone in the Games. Similarly, when Peeta saves Katniss' life, we see that Peeta is still on her side, that he is taking care of her in much the same way that he did when he gave her the bread as a child.
Johanna and Katniss have a frank exchange about the events following the Quarter Quell, and Johanna flirts with Gale when he comes to check on Katniss. Plutarch walks with Katniss as she recovers, and he explains the Roman origins of the Hunger Games: panem et circes.
Summary: Chapter 16. Katniss considers how to destroy the Careers' supplies while Rue sleeps beside her and thinks how the Careers' lifetimes of being well-fed will work against them. In the morning, she wakes to the sound of the cannon. Another tribute has died.
During the nightly anthem, she climbs up to the limb with the nest and does just that. Before she can get the branch totally sawed off, though, the anthem ends. She decides to finish the branch off, and drop the nest, in the morning. Returning back to her spot in the tree, she sees a pot with a silver parachute.
Given that she is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Peeta, it's safe to assume that the Morphling was committed to the rebel cause. Like the other victors, she knows the power that Katniss has as a lightning rod for the rebellion, and she knows that Katniss will not help without Peeta.
He won his Games by using the force field against the Capitol. Though it was a Capitol creation, Haymitch was able to use it to his advantage and win the Games with it. This is similar to the way in which Katniss and Peeta won their Games with the poisonous berries.
Page 38 Peeta's father visits Katniss and says, “I'll keep an eye on the little girl. Make sure she's eating.” has been lifted off her shoulder. But I was wondering why he was being nice to the person that is soon going to try and kill his son.
Summary and Analysis Part 2: Chapter 13. Katniss scrambles to get out of her tree and outrun the flames and smoke. She tries to keep up with the animals ahead of her, but has to take time to rest and vomit from the smoke, allowing herself a minute to recover.
Peeta saves her, saying that the girl looks just like Delly Cartwright, a chubby girl from their school who doesn't resemble the Avox in the slightest. Katniss plays along, though, and the conversation at the table relaxes.
The finale of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 has Gale lead a rescue mission to save Peeta and the other captured victors. It goes surprisingly smoothly, but Katniss' emotional reunion with Peeta is cut short when he viciously tries to strangle her, leading Boggs to knock him out.
Katniss and Gale's plan to reach Snow's mansion is jeopardized when Gale is captured by the Peacekeepers, leading to devastating consequences. After killing Coin instead of Snow, Katniss returns to District 12 with Haymitch and eventually finds solace and love with Peeta.
In the 74th Hunger Games, Clove was the only Career tribute who came close to killing Katniss twice — at the Bloodbath and at the Feast, and certainly seemed to have a deep hatred for her, perhaps because Katniss received a higher score than her.
Katniss feels betrayed, most of all by Haymitch, who used her and Peeta. Eventually she wakes to find Gale there. He's badly injured and tells her the Capitol bombed District 12 after the Games. He got Prim and Katniss's mother out in time, but the District 12 is gone.
Katniss made the choice to build her future with Peeta. If she didn't love him, she wouldn't have made that choice. Katniss made her whole world about getting the people she cared about to the next day, her choice to survive with Peeta proves her love for him. Peeta was open about his admiration of Katniss early on.
Gale and Katniss' kiss is representative of the ongoing struggle between them, including their trying to reconcile their past with their present. Gale remembers that the last time Katniss kissed him was after he'd been lashed by a Peacekeeper.
Gale is jealous of Peeta and the relationship he has with Katniss, and he wants Katniss to decide between them, though he doesn't press Katniss during her recovery in District 13. Gale is an excellent hunter and excels at setting snares and traps.
Gale was responsible for creating weapons that would trigger a second wave of bombs to target first responders and combat healers. This invention potentially ended up killing Prim, but even if he wasn't directly responsible, Katniss found this tactic so abhorrent that she lost her affection for him.
