Tod is orphaned at the beginning of the movie when his mom runs dogs away from Tod and a gunshot sounds in a field. He's later abandoned in the forest by his human caretaker in hopes that it will save him from getting hunted.

Tod and Copper grow up being best friends, but as Copper is raised to be a hunting dog, specifically to hunt foxes, their friendship is put to the ultimate test. Why was Fox and the Hound 2 bad?
It has none of the charm of the original, the comedy within the picture is not funny, in fact, the title of the movie is Fox and Hound 2, and yet, it makes us feel like we're paying less attention to the Fox and the Hound. It adds in new characters, but they don't make any sense.
But in the end, the film agrees with Tod's steadfast belief that he and Copper could be friends. The only reason they aren't is that everyone thinks that hunting dogs and foxes can't be friends, and Slade has decided to turn Copper into a hunting dog. Copper, eager to please Slade, goes along with this.
Tod's Mother's death resembles that of Bambi's mother's death, as they were both shot by hunters off-screen. Many fans believe that Amos Slade was presumably the hunter (off-screen) who killed Tod's Mother, & that Chief was the dog chasing her.
Big Mama tells Tod that he must realize his friendship with Copper can't last forever since one day Copper will become a full-fledged hunting dog. Tod is sure that Copper would never hunt him down, believing their friendship is too strong.
Copper positions himself in front of him to prevent Amos from doing so, refusing to move away. Amos, understanding Tod had saved their lives, lowers his rifle and leaves with Copper. Tod and Copper share one last smile before parting. At home, Tweed nurses Amos back to health, much to his humiliation.
