The Battle of Dale was a battle fought between the realm of Dale allied with the Dwarves of Erebor and the Iron Hills, against the Easterlings of Rhûn in the valley of Dale during the War of the Ring in the late Third Age, and was the decisive battle in the Northern Theater of the War of the Ring.
In 3019 an army of Easterlings attacked the Lonely Mountain and Dale. Dain died at a great age during that attack, part of the War of the Ring, still fighting as a mighty ax-wielder despite his great age. He perished standing over the body of his friend King Brand (grandson of Bard) before the Gate of Erebor.
Death. Dáin participated in the War of the Ring's northern campaign but was killed during the Battle of Dale in TA 3019, defending the body of King Brand of Dale before the gates of the Lonely Mountain. He was, by then, an extremely old Dwarf, at the age of two-hundred and fifty-two, but still strong for his age.
Dain II is the one who showed up at the Battle of the Five Armies with an army of dwarfs. He was the oldest male heir of Durin. Fun Fact: After Dain came his son Thorin III. But after him it was Balin who would have been king.
Described as a "long-worm", although this imprecise term seems to be more of an expression rather than a separate taxonomic group. Smaug — the last great dragon of Middle-earth, slain by Bard of Esgaroth.
Dale is rebuilt under Bard's leadership, and Dwarves and Men reforge their friendship. Some of the Dwarves, led by Balin, leave Erebor to reclaim the ancient Dwarvish Kingdom of Moria.

The townsmen's arrows and spears proved useless against the dragon's armoured body. The thrush told Bard the Bowman of Smaug's one weak spot, a bare patch on the dragon's belly. With his last arrow, Bard killed Smaug by shooting into this place.

At the end of the novel, The Hobbit, Balin has formed such a great relationship with Bilbo that he is the only dwarf to visit him with Gandalf a second time. Later in life, Balin led an expedition to re-colonize the lost dwarven kingdom of Moria. He was successful, and declared Lord of Moria.
Dale is bitten by a zombie that was hiding under one of the cars, and is only narrowly rescued by the arrival of the raid party who quickly take Dale back into the prison in order to have his leg amputated.
What happened to the Lonely Mountain during The Lord of the Rings?
Erebor, also known as the Lonely Mountain, was lost for 171 years before Thorin began his quest to reclaim his homeland. Following the destruction of Smaug and the Battle of Five Armies, the Dwarves freed the Lonely Mountain and settled there once more.
Bard the Bowman is a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. A Man of Laketown and a descendant of the ancient Lords of Dale, Bard manages to kill Smaug, the dragon, after which he becomes king of Dale.
Thorin is buried with the Arkenstone and Orcrist; Kili and Fili, who also died in battle, are buried, too. One-fourteenth of the hoard is given to Bard and some is given to Bilbo. Bilbo leaves with Gandalf, Elvenking, and Beorn and spends yuletide with Beorn, staying with him till spring.
The whole reason why Gandalf got the dwarves and Bilbo on their mission to Erebor was because he feared an alliance between Sauron and Smaug. While it was unlikely that the dragon would serve Sauron, a collaboration was more than possible in Gandalf's mind (and his mind tended to be spot on).
Roaring in fury and pain, Smaug fell from the sky and plummeted into the flaming ruins of Lake-town. His death marked the end of the great dragons in Middle-earth.
Gimli is the son of Glóin who is introduced in The Hobbit as a member of Thorin Oakenshield's company, also being one of his four third cousins. Thorin himself is a direct descendant of Durin I, even becoming the King of Durin's Folk in his lifetime.
Gloin is Gimli's father. Though Gimli is not present in The Hobbit, it is assumed that he is alive at this point, as he joins Gloin in traveling to the Council of Elrond in The Lord of the Rings.
After the battle, the Arkenstone was placed by Bard upon Thorin's chest within his tomb deep underneath the Lonely Mountain, and so was returned to the earth at last.
