After the events of the "Lights Out" storyline, in which Relic destroys Oa and the emotional spectrum, Rayner is believed dead after sacrificing his life to kill Relic. It is later revealed that he is in fact alive, and his survival will not be revealed to the Green Lantern Corps.

The Blue Lantern Corps' former leader Saint Walker asks Kyle to resurrect the members of his organization, to which Rayner agrees. However the task stresses his abilities past their limits, causing his White Lantern ring to fracture, downgrading Kyle back to a Green Lantern.
Before he can suffocate, Kyle is then brutally ripped apart by Sinestro's corps members, killing him almost instantly. Kyle's ring was then destroyed by Sinestro, preventing it from seeking out a replacement.
