Electro seemingly disappears in to nothing near the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Whether he truly died or not is unknown. However, actor Jamie Foxx, when asked on the topic, replied that "electricity can't die", fueling the idea that Electro may make a return.
What happened to Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2?
Electro is only defeated when Spider-Man overloads him with power and electricity, which causes him to explode. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 originally made it seem as though Electro died, but the movie included a tease that he could return. The power bar that remained from Electro eventually flickered with power.
Seeing this as his chance to be someone, he took the name Electro and became an enemy of Spider-Man, whom he used to worship and whose name he figured out. In their final battle at Oscorp's main power grid, Spider-Man overcharged Electro with energy, causing him to explode.

Was Electro originally a girl?
Most of the fans believe that she's an adaptation of Francine Frye but she is never referred to as such by any of the characters and the creators never confirmed it. The original male Electro, Max Dillion, is used on the Marvel HQ website because of this Electro being created for Season 2.
