"Welcome To My Nightmare." It all starts in Freddy's nightmare realm. Because they are somewhere that Freddy is all-powerful, he taunts Jason with this iconic quote, letting him know he is in his world, and has no chance of winning while they are there.

He was created by Wes Craven and made his debut in Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) as the malevolent spirit of a child killer who had been burned to death by his victims' parents after evading prison. Krueger goes on to murder his victims in their dreams, causing their deaths in the real world as well.

Consequently, fire is one of the few things he fears. In his dream world, Freddy is invincible. However, when Freddy is pulled into the real world, he is the most vulnerable and can be killed.

But, essentially, right before his death, Freddy traded his soul to the Dream Demons and was granted a decent bit of immortality and various supernatural powers to continue to haunt the human race. As the franchise grew, the origins of Freddy's powers shifted, but so did the rest of his backstory.
