Weakness: She would sometimes use other people From childhood, Katniss has a lot of responsibilities on her plate, and she sees a lot of pain and suffering. She lives in a very harsh world under a totalitarian government, and she's usually focused on surviving and keeping her family safe.
Her anger is well-deserved, but sometimes she lets it get the better of her. She often reacts impulsively instead of thinking things through. However, this is one of her negative attributes that overall just makes her a more believable character and also more relatable.
For example, Katniss Everdeen has a fatal flaw of valuing others (beginning with her sister) and putting herself last. She does this numerous times, especially with Peeta. This major flaw in her character nearly gets her killed several times. She must overcome it to survive.
No one on earth could endure the torture that Peeta went through without being horrifically traumatized, but the fact that he was so forthright about his love for Katniss didn't do him any favors in that department either.
Gale is jealous of Peeta and the relationship he has with Katniss, and he wants Katniss to decide between them, though he doesn't press Katniss during her recovery in District 13. Gale is an excellent hunter and excels at setting snares and traps.
Peeta is the same age as Katniss, making him 16 years old in The Hunger Games and 17-18 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Peeta is of "medium height, stocky build" and has "ashy blond hair that falls in waves over his forehead." He has blue eyes.
Ultimately, in Mockingjay, it was undeniable that Katniss was completely in love with Peeta. Even though both Gale and Peeta are great men who wanted the best for Katniss, there's no doubt Peeta was kinder, and more loyal and understanding. These qualities made Peeta way better as a character and as a love interest.
As the lead character in The Hunger Games, it isn't a surprise that Katniss is the strongest character in the franchise. Katniss's expertise with the bow is outstanding, and she manages to successfully defend herself with this weapon throughout the whole series.
Her mother's depression increases Katniss' genetic risk for PTSD, given common genetic risks for both disorders. All this is set against a backdrop of an oppressive government. Katniss is constantly looking over her shoulder in fear that her illicit hunting activities will get her and her family executed.
Katniss is definitely afraid of something happening to her family, especially her little sis, but when it comes to her own safety, she can be fearless. Of course, she's worried about dying in the Games, but it doesn't keep her from getting in the face of just about every authority figure she meets.
Sadly, however, Katniss began to see Gale as a representation of war and anger as most of Panem's 13 Districts embarked on the Second Rebellion. What started as an admirable attribute quickly ended up driving a wedge between the former allies once Primrose met her death.
Katniss is rendered deaf in one ear after she blows up the Careers' supplies, and she doesn't regain any hearing on her left side until afterwards when the Capitol gives her a hearing aid.
The recurring mention of a need for water, and Katniss' inability to find any, lets the reader know that this will continue to be a problem, and her growing thirst indicates that she needs to fix this problem quickly if she's going to survive much longer. Again we see Katniss struggling with her emotions about Peeta.
Katniss has just learned that Peeta has romantic feelings for her, and initially she feels she is being used. She becomes angry with Peeta as a result, going so far as to shove him over an urn of flowers.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
Interestingly, Katniss is taller than Peeta only in the film versions of The Hunger Games novels—so it's not that the film is simply staying faithful to the source material. In fact, the books contain subtle text clues that Peeta is the taller of the two.
Although she will never know for sure, Katniss does recognize that she cannot be with Gale. She will never be able to forgive him for his idea — the parachute bombs — that killed Prim.
Peeta thanks Katniss for finding him and she says that he would have done the same. He talks about what Katniss should do if he doesn't make it back. She's worried that he might die, and to keep him from speaking of such things, she kisses him. It's her first kiss.
Character List and Analysis Gale Hawthorne. Gale, Katniss' 18-year-old hunting partner, is well-liked by many girls in the District 12. When he first meets Katniss in the woods, he believes that her name is Catnip, and so this becomes his permanent nickname for her.
Haymitch Abernathy was born 40 years prior to the 74th Hunger Games, during the same year the 34th Hunger Games were held. There is no information regarding his childhood and early teenage years, although it is known that he is from the Seam of District 12, and had a younger brother, a mother, and a girlfriend.
On March 23, 2011, Lionsgate began casting the role of Peeta for the film of The Hunger Games. According to The Hollywood Reporter, contenders for the role included Josh Hutcherson, Alexander Ludwig (later cast as Cato), Hunter Parrish, Lucas Till, and Evan Peters.
