The 14th century Corvin Castle in the Hunedoara region of western Romania was chosen as one of the film's key locations, with the production team building a new access point to the building to suit the needs of the story.
Film director Corin Hardy had a Roman Catholic priest bless the set prior to filming. Scenes were filmed in the Palace of the Parliament building in June, for a fee of €5,000 per hour. Filming also took place at the Corvin Castle in Hunedoara and in Sighișoara, Transylvania.
And since all of the prior Conjuring films were inspired by purportedly true events, it's no surprise that The Nun's Carta Monastery is a real place. The Nun takes place in 1952, and it depicts Romania's Carta Monastery as an actual, functioning Abbey.

Tourists are told that Vlad Tepes, known as Vlad the Impaler or the real-life inspiration for Dracula, was held prisoner for 7 years by John of Hunedoara at Corvin Castle. Because of this story, the Hunedoara Castle was the source of inspiration for Castle Dracula in Bram Stoker's 1897 horror novel “Dracula”.

The Nun is not based on a true story. But it's possible The Nun was inspired by several of the Warren's cases, even though the things that happened in those cases may or may not be true.
