The film explores an alternate history where non-avian dinosaurs never became extinct, following a young, timid Apatosaurus named Arlo (Ochoa), who meets an unlikely human friend named Spot (Bright) while traveling through a dangerous and mysterious landscape in order to return home, after being washed downriver.
For those unfamiliar, the ending sees Arlo (the dinosaur) and Spot (the feral boy) notice a family of humans in the distance. They walk to each other, and Arlo realises that Spot belongs with them. Arlo then pushes Spot away and indicates to him that this is his new family, and he should stay with them.
During the film's climatic scene, Arlo sees his father again. At first, he believes his father is alive, but then he realizes that he's talking to nothing more than a memory.
The film ends with Arlo arriving back home to his mother and siblings, and he is allowed to leave his mud-print on the silo between the prints of his mother and father.

What is the conflict of the movie The Good Dinosaur?
The main conflict is Arlo's inner journey to embracing his fear, while his outer conflict revolves around getting home. His relationship with Spot is actually entirely ancillary to the main conflict.
The show's last scene sees Earl finally realizing what he has done: By sucking up to his boss and agreeing to spray the world with poison, he's doomed everyone to an Ice Age. He apologizes to the family and admits he shouldn't have taken nature for granted as he tries to comfort the Baby.
I definitely wanted to find that boy quality.” Sohn was more interested in making The Good Dinosaur a neo-Western survival flick in which nature is the primary antagonist. (In the revised script, Arlo's father dies in a rainstorm, leaving Arlo lost in the wilderness with Spot.)
So when Arlo falls into a river and finds himself swept hundreds of miles away from home, he's forced to face his fear for the first time in his life, braving the harsh, untamed wilderness and a long, arduous journey home.
But no we don't get to see the 2 of them reunited in the end and this really made me sad. after their depressing goodbye we quickly go back to the farm and Arlo's reunited with his family, and seconds after that it's all about Arlo earning his mark.
As beautifully detailed as the scenery is in the film, it doesn't make up for its lack of substance. Its minimalistic story and underdeveloped characters meant that it made Pixar's first flop. The Good Dinosaur now stands as one of Pixar's worst films and a sad example of what can happen with a messy production.

In addition, the movie attempted to use symbolism to show Spot finding other, more evolved humans in the wild while going to Arlo's home by using white hair on the older male human. Later in the film, they show an entire family of humans, with both the parents and children looking albino with grey hair and red eyes.
The Pixar Ball, as you can imagine, is yet another one of Pixar's biggest Easter eggs. Like the Pizza Planet truck, it too appears in every single Pixar film, including The Good Dinosaur. It can briefly be spotted in the scene where Arlo and Spot get hilariously intoxicated from eating the fermented fruit.
Evidence suggests an asteroid impact was the main culprit. Volcanic eruptions that caused large-scale climate change may also have been involved, together with more gradual changes to Earth's climate that happened over millions of years.
