This simply means that Frenchie is in demonic possession as inverted cross symbolizes demon according to all movies of The Conjuring universe. It also points that the Frenchie is the guy who is shown in the beginning of The Conjuring, thus connecting the events of this movie to The Nun.
The sequel is set four years after the events of the first film and a decade before the events of The Conjuring, seeing the aftermath of Frenchie's (Jonas Bloquet) possession by the demonic entity Valak. That never seemed to make total sense given what has been established about Lorraine in the series. However, The Nun 2 has now confirmed that even though they're not the same person, the two characters are related.
Is Frenchie still possessed at the end of The Nun 2?
At the end of the movie, it appears that Valak has left Maurice/Frenchie's body and that he's back to normal. However, don't forget that this movie takes place in 1956, and the events of The Conjuring—in which Maurice is exorcised by the Warrens—take place in 1968. Maurice clearly still has a little devil left in him.
As she's being burned, Irene realizes her abilities and her visions of the past mean that she's a direct descendant of Saint Lucy, and her understanding of that is one of the things that gives Irene the strength to overcome the demon nun in their final confrontation.
Irene, who has yet to take her vows, is chosen due to her proclivity for visions — a gift from her mother. If I'm honest, Father Burke is just kinda there. During the film he tends to just get himself into dangerous situations and does one important act near the epic conclusion.
It appears the demon is finally dead, but those who have seen other instalments in the series already know Valak is back haunting the living by the 1970s, when The Conjuring takes place.
You are Valak - the defiler, the profane, the marquis of snakes! In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, I condemn you back to Hell! Valak's defeat as Lorraine Warren condemns the demon back to Hell.
Irene uses the relic against Maurice, but he grabs it, causing Valak to appear. Similar to Father Noiret, Valak lifts Irene in the air and sets her ablaze. Irene does not burn as Valak realizes she is a descendant of St. Lucy, able to harness the same power associated with the relic.
The theory of the uncanny double helps explain Irene's hatred of and obsession with Clare, as she simultaneously represents everything Irene is as well as everything Irene chooses not to be.
The sequel puts forward the notion that Valak was once an angel that was banished by God, and recovering Saint Lucy's eyes will restore its former powers. Exactly what the Nun will do with these abilities is never spelled out, and while the demon succeeds in absorbing them, it's defeated soon after.
He's handsome, strong, full of himself, and he takes an instant interest in Rose. Frenchie is intensely jealous of Derrick for this reason, though he comforts himself by noting that Derrick's braid isn't as long as his and by watching older Council members reprimand Derrick for not waking up in time to join the hunt.
The horror film ends with its antagonist, Valak, seemingly defeated, with Maurice no longer possessed and able to build a life with Sophie and Kate if he chooses. However, the character is destined to die later in The Conjuring universe, as the demon still latches onto him during an exorcism performed by the Warrens.
Will there be The Nun 3? The Nun 3 is not yet confirmed, but there is demand and narrative potential for the franchise to continue with another installment. If The Nun 3 does happen, it is likely to be released no earlier than 2026, based on the release timeline of previous films.
