Like the famous scar of Odysseus in Homer's epic poem the Odyssey, Harry's forehead lightning bolt is a badge of honor, an emblem of having survived a great battle and of being destined to wage still more battles in the future.
In the books it is revealed that Harry Potter got the scar when he was attacked by Voldemort, who had just murdered his parents. Voldemort launched the killing curse "Avada Kedavra" at baby Potter but the spell rebounded. It was the only time someone had been hit in the face by the curse and survived.
Notably, Voldemort appeared to be entirely unaware of this split, as he later created a seventh Horcrux in his quest to have six, and continued to target Harry Potter despite him now holding part of Voldemort's own soul.

Harry's visions of what is happening in Voldemort's mind are always accompanied by pain in the lightning-bolt shaped scar on his forehead. The reverse is not always true; pain in Harry's scar can be triggered by Voldemort's proximity as well as the power of his thoughts and emotions.
After Lord Voldemort destroyed the fragment of his soul residing in Harry, Harry seemingly lost the ability to speak Parseltongue, about which he was glad and relieved. Over the next twenty-two years, he never attempted to speak the language, presuming that it had died with Voldemort.
The scar is no longer dark, and instead has faded almost to his usual skintone. Scars do fade with time, but J.K Rowling wrote in the book that: "The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well." Many people believe the fact the scar has gone dormant after he left Hogwarts is why it faded.
Since he had just murdered Harry's parents in cold blood and attempted to kill a defenseless infant, there was enough justification for the creation of a Horcrux. At that moment, Voldemort's soul latched onto the only living thing in the building — Harry himself. For almost his entire life, Harry was a Horcrux.
