Plot. Alice is enslaved on a 19th-century style plantation in Georgia, owned by Paul Bennet. Attempting to escape, she runs through a vast forest and emerges onto a Georgia highway in 1973. She meets Frank, a truck driver who helps her adjust to the truth of the time period, and that she has been misled her whole life.
The most prominent example of this, on which the movie is based, is the life of Mae Louise Walls Miller. She didn't get her freedom until 1961, when she ran away from the plantation and found a family that rescued her and her family.
This film should be so empowering, but it falls flat. Even with her stellar performance by Keke Palmer leading the way, Alice is a mixed bag that tries and fails to marry two disparate elements of the African-American experience in a satisfyingly cinematic package.
Is the Netflix movie still Alice based on a true story?
Still Alice is based on a novel of the same name published in 2007. The novel was written by Lisa Genova, a neuroscientist who was inspired by her grandmother's development of Alzheimer's disease to write about the disease from a firsthand perspective.
While Palmer may seem like a true story — there's something very specific and heartwarming about a recently-incarcerated man taking a gender non-conforming child under his wing in rural Louisiana — it is entirely fictional.
An enjoyable film with an unusual storyline. Good acting by a cast I'm not familiar with and it's an easy watch with some interesting twists. A solid 7 in my book.

Did Alice escape the simulation? Yes, it seems that Alice did escape the simulation. Though it's not confirmed explicitly, as the scene fades to black, we do hear Alice breathing as though waking up. This can be interpreted as her escaping the simulation and being fully conscious within the real world.

The acting and powerful storytelling belie expectations. See it, and you will be impressed. Timberlake underplays terrifically. As directed by Fisher Stevens and performed by a first-rate cast the film is low-keyed, sincere, humanistic and occasionally shockingly tough.
