J. M. Barrie may have based the character of Peter Pan on his older brother, David, who died in an ice-skating accident the day before his 14th birthday. His mother and brother thought of him as forever a boy.
In 1897, Barrie met and befriended the Llewelyn Davies family and he soon became a favourite with the five boys: George, Jack, Peter, Michael and Nico. It was the Llewelyn Davies boys who provided the inspiration for Peter Pan.
In the original draft of the novel, Peter is a villain, kidnapping young children from their beds. The Little White Bird is a semi-autobiographical tale, considered to be a thinly veiled novel about George Llewelyn Davies, one of the boys who inspired Barrie's Lost Boys.
However, even Barrie's Peter Pan play retained some of the darker tones of the first novel. Peter Pan longed for Wendy's company but realized she would eventually grow old as well. The sentiment of solitude would prompt him to murder pirates and Lost Boys as they started to age.
The new Peter Pan & Wendy confirms the connection between Captain Hook and Peter goes further back than Peter, causing the pirate to lose his hand. Captain Hook was the first lost boy in Neverland, and he and Peter were best friends.

Captain James Hook is the main antagonist of J. M. Barrie's 1904 play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up and its various adaptations, in which he is Peter Pan's archenemy. The character is a pirate captain of the brig Jolly Roger.
Peter and Hook, a.k.a. James, were best friends in Neverland until James said he missed his mother. At this, Peter got angry, apparently feeling that he should be enough family for James, and still feeling resentment for his own mother. At the end of the film, Wendy is finally able to hear Tinker Bell speak as Peter can, and the fairy thanks Wendy for hearing her. Peter was always able to hear Tinker Bell, even if her voice wasn't heard in the film. Tinker Bell can only be heard by those who can understand fairies.
When she transforms, and gives Peter a kiss, it's a last ditch effort to express her feelings for him. But, the gesture flies right over his head and he is jolted back into remembering his wife and kids. In the end, Tinkerbell resolves to fade out of Peter's life when he returns to London.
Wendy is depicted as Peter's niece, the daughter of Peter's sister Alice, and the great-granddaughter and great-niece to the Mad Hatter and Captain Hook respectively.
The crocodile's symbolic function as time, fate, and the inevitable is Hook's own invention, a trace of Hook's love for a vanished order. In the end, the crocodile's only symbolic connection to fate is his passive compliance in fulfilling his savage goal of getting Hook.

In Disney's animated Peter Pan, Wendy and her brothers go home. However, the Lost Boys don't go with them because they aren't ready to grow up (yet). Peter and the Lost Boys return to Neverland on the pirate ship as Wendy and her parents watch through the window.
