Beatrix "the Bride" Kiddo (codename: Black Mamba) is the protagonist of the martial arts films Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), directed by Quentin Tarantino. She is portrayed by Uma Thurman.
It is not until Kill Bill: Volume 2 that Tarantino stops having The Bride's name censored out when her true identity is revealed as Beatrix Kiddo. For those who watch with a careful eye, there are moments in the first film when Tarantino presented the answer to the mystery before the climactic moment.

Why did Bill shoot Beatrix?
Beatrix became engaged to a man named Tommy, and on the day of their wedding rehearsal, Bill (believing the father of Beatrix's child was her fiancé and thus feeling even more betrayed) ordered the assassination of everyone at the chapel. With Beatrix wounded and lying on the floor, Bill shot her in the head.
Despite his vicious demeanor and moments of aggressive preaching, Pai Mei was also a rather open-minded individual. After seeing Beatrix's tenacity in her training; one could say, he came to like her as a student and cared for her.
The reason he buried her alive instead of just letting her walk away is because he valued his own life, and he didn't want to die either. So with the flashlight and knife, at least she had some kind of chance. And knowing Beatrix, being buried alive was most likely just a simple obstacle for her.
The Bride was once a member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, an elite group of assassins. She is trained by the martial arts master Pai Mei and becomes the right hand of Bill, her boss and lover, provoking the envy of another Deadly Viper, Elle Driver.
