Katniss notices that a girl named Glimmer has the bow and arrows from the Cornucopia. A large and dangerous looking boy named Cato begins climbing up after Katniss, but he falls out of the tree. Glimmer goes up next, but she doesn't get far before she must stop.
Katniss realizes that Rue is pointing to a wasp nest above her and wonders if these are true wasps or if they are one of the Capitol's muttations, a type of wasp called the tracker jacker.
She makes her bed in the tree branches, her burns screaming, and then notices a pair of eyes in a tree beside her. It's Rue, and she's pointing to something above Katniss' head. This chapter reveals how much control the Gamemakers have over the Hunger Games.
What does Katniss realize from the tree what does she do that is surprising?
What does Katniss realize from the top of the tree? What surprising thing does she do? She realizes that she is at least 50-60 pounds lighter than the Careers and they would never reach her height. She starts to talk to the Careers.
The Careers waiting so long to catch Katniss seemed unnecessary, but burning down the tree to catch her instantly was too risky. The Careers may revel in the hunt, but they were smart enough to know the dangers of playing with fire, especially in the small arena The Hunger Games was set.
Katniss sings a song called “The Hanging Tree” about a man who has been hanged. In the song he calls out for his lover, still alive, to “flee,” but in the end, it becomes clear that he's asking her to die along with him, hanging from a tree.
Katniss feels betrayed, most of all by Haymitch, who used her and Peeta. Eventually she wakes to find Gale there. He's badly injured and tells her the Capitol bombed District 12 after the Games. He got Prim and Katniss's mother out in time, but the District 12 is gone.
For one thing, Songbirds & Snakes is set 64 years before Katniss volunteers as tribute. That means there's probably a generation or two between Lucy Gray and Katniss if they are related. Fans also know who Katniss' mother is, so that rules out Lucy Gray being her mom.
In the book she is about 150-200 pounds, as she is described as being at least 50-100 pounds heavier than 100-pound Katniss. It is heavily implied that Clove is at least 15 and overall larger than Katniss. In the movie, Clove is smaller and younger than Katniss, being only 14-15 and weighing just at 100 pounds.
Their roles as star-crossed lovers help them gain sponsors and survive the games. Once the games begin, Peeta forms alliances with the Careers, which Katniss does not initially realize is part of his plot to protect her. After Peeta tells Katniss to run from Cato, Cato stabs Peeta in the thigh and leaves him for dead.
Page 38 Peeta's father visits Katniss and says, “I'll keep an eye on the little girl. Make sure she's eating.” has been lifted off her shoulder. But I was wondering why he was being nice to the person that is soon going to try and kill his son.
She believes she must have sponsors who want to send her some water. It occurs to Katniss that perhaps she's close to finding some, and this is the reason Haymitch is withholding it, but by afternoon, she believes she's reached the end of her abilities.
President Snow, leader of Panem, arrives with a crown, breaking it in half to crown both Katniss and Peeta. By the coldness in his eyes, Katniss sees that President Snow blames her for being the instigator of the berry stunt.
Peeta urges Katniss to run and stays to fight fellow tribute Cato while she escapes. He survives the encounter with Cato but suffers a stab wound on his leg.
Before the Capitol battle, Gale had explained to Katniss his series of bombs designed to feed off human compassion: a small bomb would go off, and then when medical aid rushed in, a second bomb would go off, killing those people as well. Incidentally, it's this exact type of bomb that took Prim's life.
Although she will never know for sure, Katniss does recognize that she cannot be with Gale. She will never be able to forgive him for his idea — the parachute bombs — that killed Prim.
Snow laughs after Katniss killed Coin because he enjoys the irony of the situation. He avoided the official execution ceremony, even though Panem's citizens still take their revenge on him, while Katniss ends up snatching away the victory and power that Coin thinks she has successfully secured.
l Peeta did it so that the citizens of the Capitol would be unhappy with President Snow/the Gamemakers. Because of course they would be outraged if they were going to kill one of their favourite victors AND her unborn child.
It's only implied that they get it on via snuggling and other affectionate acts in close quarters — but if you have read the book, they really imply that they took their relationship to the next level.
This interaction was so surprising to fans because it's not in the books at all. While, throughout the series, there's some chemistry between the two, nothing ever comes of the tension in Suzanne Collins' novels. Beyond the kiss, nothing happened between the two in the movies either.
In a pivotal scene, Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, sings the haunting “The Hanging Tree.” Despite her discomfort with singing, Lawrence herself performed the song, and the single was a surprise smash, charting as high as 12 on Billboard's Hot 100.
Katniss is surprised by the motion, saying it is "an old and rarely used gesture of (District 12), occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love.” Katniss later uses the salute to say goodbye to Rue, the young District 11 tribute she couldn't save.
Katniss, in the role of the Mockingjay, is a symbol of rebellion. In Panem, the mockingjay is a pleasant bird that repeats melodies it hears, simple or intricate. Katniss wears a mockingjay pin in the Hunger Games and Quarter Quell which was given to her by a friend.
