There was a time when the DCEU could kill off a child character, nodding to 1978's Aquaman #60 (from David Michelinie, Don Newton, John Celardo, Milton Snapinn and Jerry Serpe). There, Black Manta used technology to attack the palace and suffocate the Arthur's son, causing his death.
The comic book storyline, Aquaman: Death of a Prince, saw Black Manta kidnap Aquababy and seal him in a sphere, which was slowly filled with air. Since Aquababy couldn't breathe outside of water, he suffocated and Aquaman was unable to save him in time.
Arthur Jr.'s life was tragically cut short after he was captured by Black Manta in 1977's Adventures Comics #452. The villain put the child in a tank and slowly replaced the water with air. Aquaman was able to break the tank, but it was too late. His son had lost all life signs.
In David's early life, Aquaman killed Black Manta's father Jesse Hyde by accident in retaliation for attacking Aquaman's father Thomas Curry at the time when Stephen Shin contracted David to obtain the DNA of Aquaman who later mistook Jesse for David when exacting vengeance.

In the comics, Jackson (birth name Kaldur'ahm) was originally born to an unnamed Xebellian woman and Black Manta in the Kingdom of Xebel, the young infant granted powers due to extraordinary circumstances. As an infant, he is saved by a younger Mera, who leaves him on the surface and arranges for him to be adopted.
Because of this, Manta's origin of his autism was only brought up 36 years after the character's introduction in 2003′s Aquaman #8 “Paint it Black!” where it was revealed that prior to becoming Black Manta, David Hyde was sent to Arkham Asylum due to his autistic condition being simply recognized as a criminally insane ...
He also outfitted his suit with thruster packs, allowing him limited flight capability. David's first helmet design proved to be too small to contain the plasma beams, so he made it bigger.
Manta's current origin story from Geoff Johns' Aquaman run explains that Black Manta hates Aquaman after the hero killed his father. Once again, this was used in the first DCEU Aquaman movie, and it seems to be propelling the villain's actions in the sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, as well.

It was revealed in "Alienated" that after Aqualad learned that Black Manta was his true father, and Tula died in a mission, he joined Black Manta's forces. Manta took a step back, and appointed his son his field commander.
