Mumble is the main protagonist of Happy Feet and the deuteragonist of Happy Feet Two. He is a male emperor penguin who is the son of Memphis and Norma Jean, the husband of Gloria, and the father of Erik.
Mumble is the only Emperor penguin chick in Antarctica who can't sing. His friend Gloria (voiced by Brittany Murphy) has a glorious voice, but Mumble can never hope to attract a mate without a 'heart song', the personal tune that all Emperor penguins must have.
According to Wikipedia, Mumble is stuck permanently in his baby feathers because of being dropped by Memphis as an egg. I'm not sure that's supported by the film, which makes a point of implying that baby feathers are shed once the penguin meets the requirements for sexual maturity, which was singing one's heartsong.
