It is believed that it was his activities during the First Wizarding War and his time as an Auror that led to Moody losing a leg (replaced by a wooden prosthesis). His work also led to significant facial scarring, including losing a piece of his nose in his fight with Rosier.
Moody was described as having a growling voice and looking as though his face was roughly carved from wood. Due to injuries from his long career as an Auror, it was covered with scars, and a chunk of his nose was missing. He had dark grey, grizzled hair. He also had a wooden leg.
After he was brutally killed by Lord Voldemort, Moody's dead body tragically fell from his broom. Moody, who was also prepared for every type of dangerous situation, became the first victim in Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Mad-Eye Moody's death only occurred because of a betrayal, which makes it incredibly harrowing.
The Flask. The real Alastor Moody was known for drinking from a hip flask to avoid being poisoned by his enemies but the Moody that Harry interacts with is a bit obsessed with his drink and guzzles between meals and in corridors.

Two other characters can be seen as caricatures of trauma- induced disorders: Mad-Eye Moody as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Winky the house-elf as Stockholm syndrome.
Mad-Eye Moody had earned the trust and respect from the likes of Albus Dumbledore, so no one would have ever suspected it was all one big ruse to lead Harry into the hands of Lord Voldemort. Throughout the series, he is an anti-hero due to overly-cautious and paranoid side when it comes about his personal security, but anyone who dies fighting Lord Voldemort himself isn't a villain, that aside even though Moody may look crazy as all heck but he's not a bad guy.
Voldemort didn't care if Barty lived or died. His mission lasted as long as the school year lasted. Barty was as expendable as the rest of his Death Eaters.
In the film version, Barty Crouch Jr. has the habit of licking his lips when threatened, in a snake-like way, to which he occasionally shows while under the disguise of Alastor Moody. This action led to him giving himself away to his father following the second task of the Triwizard Tournament.
Lucius Malfoy was one of the many Death Eaters who denied their allegiance to Voldemort after the end of the First Wizarding War and therefore would be a perfect example of the kind of person Barty Crouch Jr. hates the most.
Snape's true intentions were revealed in the final Harry Potter installment, showing that he was never truly evil but was instead protecting Harry from Voldemort.
George flew with Remus Lupin on a broomstick and lost an ear due to an off-target Sectumsempra spell fired by Severus Snape. There was nothing that could be done about George's ear, as it had been cursed off with Dark magic.
Moody's loyalty, caution, and resilience make him an ideal candidate for Hufflepuff House. He also filled “half the cells in Azkaban” with Voldemort's followers during the First Wizarding War, which I would argue makes him a “particularly good finder.”
Harry was the key ingredient for bringing Voldemort back, so he needed to protect Harry at all cost and make sure he made it into the Tournament with a good head start.
