Losing Peeta made her see what she had failed to see. However, the series' frightening antagonist, President Snow, remained unconvinced of Kantiss' feelings in Catching Fire. But that also seemed to imply Katniss fell in love with Peeta during their second games.
It's never really officially said when she fell in love in the moment but I personally think it was on the beach in the second arena when they kissed. I think after that she said it was the only one that felt real. I think katniss realised then that he had everything that gale didn't.

She asks Gale and his family to escape into the woods with her. He agrees happily, and confesses that he loves her. He is disappointed by her reply that she cannot love anyone romantically at such a perilous time. He is further angered when he finds out that Katniss plans to bring Peeta along into the woods.
Summary and Analysis Part 1: Chapter 2. Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place as tribute, thinking about how the odds had been in Prim's favor, that her name was one in a thousand and never should have been drawn in the first place.

In the end of the first book peeta had his leg cut by cato but then when he hid he covered himself with mud and stuff to camouflage and it got hella infected but Katniss found him and took care of him but then his leg got torn up by mutts yada yada yada blah blah blah we already knew this.

Katniss briefly mentioned that a previous stroke could have caused Mags' garbled speech. However, post-traumatic stress disorder could have also caused her speech incapacity.
Once he was stable again, Peeta seemed depressed and asked to be killed. For a long time afterwards he did not trust himself and refused to let the others remove his handcuffs. Eventually his personality went back to normal, and he never lost his grip on reality again.
