Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek who lived with his parents in a bog by a tree. It was a pretty nasty place, but he was happy because ogres like nasty. On his 7th birthday, Shrek's parents sent him away to live on his own.
Even though his background is something of a mystery, according to Shrek The Musical, it is revealed that on his seventh birthday, Shrek was sent away by his parents, because it was an ogre tradition.
Legacy. Shrek's Father does not appear in any of the movies, but he was possibly one of the contributing factors of Shrek's lifestyle. A good example being his treatment of Shrek, which might have played a part in causing him to be a aggressive loner in the first film.
In Shrek 2, Fiona's dad wasn't pleased that Fiona fell in love and married Shrek because he had a deal with Fairy Godmother that her son Prince Charming and Fiona would marry.
Add that on poor Fiona's age when she was first locked up and we find out that she's somewhere around 30. So assuming she and Shrek are the same age, since that's how the musical positions things, it's safe to say that he's about 30 as well.

Donkey (not known by any other name) is the second main character seen in the movie Shrek. He is seen as the overly-happy and annoying sidekick of Shrek. He appears in all the Shrek movies. He is voiced by the late Eddie Murphy.

In Shrek Forever After, Shrek is a ultimately a sad, lovable big guy going through some sort of mid-life crisis, forced to try to find a way to get his life back to the way it was before he met Rumpel. These just don't feel like the same characters.
Shrek Forever After contains the first and only scene where the title character cries: Shrek holds his daughter's doll, reminiscing about his kids and past life while anguishing over the fact that he is the reason they don't exist anymore.
First off, Fiona once mentioned that when she was a child, a witch cast a spell on her, yet the intro of Shrek 2 implies that she was born with the curse, which could be a consequence of the Fairy Godmother's deal with Harold, thus still making her responsible for it.
