Echo primarily takes place in May 2025, five months after the events of Hawkeye. There are several flashbacks, however. Much of Episode 1 plays out like an extended recap, giving viewers a run-through of Echo's backstory and the relevant beats of Hawkeye, which took place in Christmas 2024.
Echo episode 1 follows Maya Lopez's present-day story, intertwined with flashbacks to her childhood and scenes from Echo's MCU debut in Hawkeye. Arranged in order, these scenes show how close together the events of Hawkeye and Echo actually are.
In Phase Five, Echo is set five months after Hawkeye, in May 2025. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set in 2026, around the same time as the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the beginning of Ms. Marvel.

Maya Lopez is a deaf member of the Choctaw tribe who moved out of her hometown as a child with her father William Lopez, and became the protegée of Wilson Fisk, growing up under his care. Losing her father due to Ronin's hunt for criminals, Lopez became the Tracksuit Mafia's commander, vowing revenge on Ronin.
Echo has been touted as a standalone Marvel project, but it doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's technically a spinoff of Hawkeye, as Kingpin and protagonist Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) both appeared in that series. It's also setting the stage for the Daredevil revival: where Kingpin is, Daredevil usually follows.
Marvel Studios has integrated Netflix's Defenders Saga into the MCU's official timeline on Disney+. The Defenders Saga made many references to Marvel Television's Agents of SHIELD, and vice versa. The fact that the Defenders Saga is now MCU canon suggests that its Agents of SHIELD references may also be.
All told, Echo is fine. I enjoyed the first three episodes well enough, even if it's a bit slow for a show that's only five episodes long. All five episodes drop tonight, which also feels like a bad decision, not giving the series enough time to build up any hype.
