She was noted for her singing talent and her love of music. She and Triton had been the best of friends ever since their childhood. Unfortunately, she passed away as a result of a run-in with a big pirate ship when Ariel was very young, fuelling her husband's hatred of humans and leaving him widowed as a result.
Athena appears in the film's flashbacks to when her daughters were very young. She and Triton are shown to be very much in love. They are shown to share a special song (known as "Endless Sky").
As part of remaking Disney's animated hit, The Little Mermaid, the film added a variety of new backstories to characters like Prince Eric and Ursula, but another character who got a bit more screen time despite never physically appearing in the movie was Ariel's mother.

Aside from dying, Ariel's mother had minimal impact on her story. In fact, there were very few women in The Little Mermaid except for the villain, Ursula.
