The serial-killing doll wraps his seventh film in the Great White North. Filmmaker Don Mancini explains why the Manitoba winter was the right fit for the latest instalment in his campy horror series.
Filming. Filming for the series was scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2020, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shooting for the first season officially began on March 29, 2021, and concluded on August 11, 2021, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
In Season 1 of “Chucky,” fans got to see the first time a young Charles Lee Ray took a life. During his eighth birthday party in 1965, Charles overhears there's a killer loose in his hometown of Hackensack, New Jersey. Soon after, he is woken in the night by a strange noise downstairs.
Unlike the first film which was mostly shot on-location in Chicago, most of the second film was shot in Universal Studios Lot in Universal City, California. Brad Dourif recorded all of his dialogue as Chucky in advance, which allowed his words to match up with his facial movements better than in the first film.
The quartzite stone-clad apartment block of Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks), in which the malevolent Chucky Doll goes on the rampage, is the Brewster Apartments, 2800 North Pine Grove Avenue at West Diversey Parkway in Chicago's Lake View district.
That meant that Chucky production designer John Dondertman had to find a house that looked enough like the iconic home located at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. “Amazingly we found a pretty good match to one side of that building. It had the same eyebrow windows,” Dondertman told SYFY WIRE.
The real-world setting of the first Friday the 13th film is by far the most famous. The grounds used for Camp Crystal Lake is a Boy Scout retreat called Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco located in Hardwick, New Jersey.
After Mancini decided to make Andy Barclay 16 years old, he considered recasting the role with Jonathan Brandis before hiring Justin Whalin. Before Jack Bender became director, Mancini wanted to hire Peter Jackson. Principal photography began on February 4, 1991, at the Kemper Military School in Boonville, Missouri.
Filming. Principal photography for Candyman took place between August and September 2019 in the Chicago area under the working title Say My Name. Some filming took place in the North Park neighborhood during the month of September.
Production. On January 15, 2023, the series was renewed for a third season. Despite the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, filming began in Toronto on April 27 of that year. It was expected to continue through August, however in mid-July production was interrupted due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
Chucky returned for its third season on SYFY and USA back in early October, giving us four new episodes of mayhem throughout the Halloween month as Chucky (Brad Dourif) found a new home at the most famous house in America: The White House.

Alex Vincent reprises his role as Andy Barclay (now 8 years old) in Child's Play 2 and is even better than in the first film, capturing the character's mix of innocence and trauma.
