Godzilla was inspired by King Kong's popularity in Japan and the film revived and reconfigured parts of the King Kong story more powerfully than any other film has. RKO theatrically re-released King Kong for the last time in 1956. King Kong was sold to television after the conclusion of the 1956 release.
The last time enduring movie monsters King Kong and Godzilla got together was in 2021′s Godzilla vs. Kong and, even as mindless popcorn flicks go, it was wildly stupid.

Can Kong defeat Godzilla?
Summary. Godzilla is the clear winner in the battles against Kong, showcasing his superior power and invincibility. Despite losing the fights, Kong still plays a crucial role in the story, defeating Mechagodzilla and earning the title of "King Kong".
Kong didn't bow before Godzilla like the other Titans did in King of the Monsters, and more than that, Kong is inherently a threat to Godzilla's kingship. Add that to the fact that Godzilla can feel Kong's every move with his planet-scoping power, and the ultimate battle between the two was completely unavoidable.
Godzilla roars in acknowledgement and respect for Kong, seeing him as an equal and a friend (same with Kong respecting Godzilla as an equal and a friend) before returning to the sea and disappearing beneath the waves as Kong and the gathered humans watch on, safe in the knowledge that the world is finally at peace.
"Kong is bigger in this film. There's a line in Skull Island that he's still growing, so he's an adolescent in that film," said Garcia. "Where we begin 40-something years later he is significantly larger, but he's still the Kong.
The massive growth spurt isn't the only thing that's changed about Kong. In addition to his increased size, Kong appears much older in other ways. His fur has taken on a darker shade, and he's grown a beard that gives him the wise, seasoned look of a Titan who has lived a long life.
Godzilla's Pink Atomic Power Is A Result Of His Evolution
As revealed in Godzilla x Kong, Godzilla's completely revamped appearance was a direct result of another Titan's energy. Specifically, the pink upgrade came courtesy of Tiamat, one of the 11 unseen monsters mentioned in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

However, the MonsterVerse timeline doesn't follow the chronological release order of the movies. Kong, it was demonstrated early on that Godzilla had him beat in a contest of raw power. His atomic breath put Kong at an even greater disadvantage. Acquiring the axe helped even the odds a bit and gave him a fighting chance against Godzilla, but while it certainly helped, it ultimately wasn't enough.
Instead, Godzilla acknowledged Kong as an equal and he returned to the sea. While it's impossible to know for sure what's in the hearts and minds of giant monsters, Kong apparently earned Godzilla's respect so the lizard left him alone.
In Godzilla vs Kong, why did Godzilla let Kong live when he had Kong on the ground beneath his feet? Out of respect. Godzilla had Kong at his mercy and roars right in his face as a warning to surrender, and never challenge his rule.
The rivalry between Godzilla and King Kong is well noted within their established mythos, including and especially the current MonsterVerse canon, but there's one kaiju Godzilla hates far more than Kong (or any other Titan, for that matter): King Ghidorah - and there's only one reason as to why.
Mutual Respect: Kong's actions in coming to Godzilla's rescue during the battle with Mechagodzilla demonstrated his bravery and willingness to fight alongside Godzilla. This act of solidarity and teamwork earned Kong's respect and led Godzilla to spare his life [2].
So, as far as the movies are concerned, Godzilla is the stronger fighter. Biologically, he also has the upper hand. According to a scientific breakdown of Godzilla's physicality (via Science Focus), he has an estimated bite force of around 57,000 Newtons.

While producer Tomoyuki Tanaka stated in his 1983 and 1984 books, The Complete History of Toho Special Effects Movies, and Definitive Edition Godzilla Introduction that he believed the battle ended in a draw, Toho still maintains that Kong was the victor on their global website in 2023.
Kong's species was wiped out by the Skullcrawlers in a grand and brutal battle, leaving Kong as the last survivor on Skull Island. Kong's survival was due to his mother hiding him away during the battle, but his strength and eventual rise as the King of Skull Island were fueled by rage and fury.
Kong was the last of his kind. He was portrayed in the film as being quite old, with graying fur and battle-worn with scars, wounds, and a crooked jaw from his many fights against rival creatures. He is the dominant being on the island, the king of his world.
