While Severus Snape was trying to cut the hand of a fellow Death Eater, he accidentally used a Sectumsempra Curse to slice George Weasley's ear. This dark magic spell, which Snape created during his student years at Hogwarts, is a curse that slashes through the skin like a sword and causes great bleeding.
The injury was caused by Snape's Sectumsempra spell in order to stop the Death Eaters from hurting George (who he thought was Harry) and Lupin, but missed and hit George. Hermione and Kingsley then arrived, both unharmed, followed by Arthur and Fred Weasley, both concerned for George.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Fred and George are members of the Order of the Phoenix and serve as two of Harry's six decoys when he escapes Privet Drive. George loses one of his ears to Snape's Sectumsempra curse (which was aimed at a Death Eater's wand hand, but missed).

By Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it's a stretch to call Draco a villain anymore. We just watched — or read — him struggle to reconcile his choices and morals in The Half-Blood Prince. He can no longer justify his actions, and is far more aware of the evil he was born and raised into.

In LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, Harry uses Sectumsempra on Malfoy only to find out the spell has, apparently, painlessly sliced him in half. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Voldemort may have used this spell to slit Snape's throat before having Nagini finish him off.
Therefore, Fred's death is one of the most heartbreaking moments in the entire Harry Potter series. Seeing Ron at his most vulnerable and experiencing such a harrowing moment is a lot for fans and his friends to witness.
