Following The Sopranos series finale, it's been posited that Paulie set Tony up to be killed during the last episode. Paulie Walnuts is one of Tony's longest and closest friends, and the thought of him killing the show's lead seems outlandish early on.
He later learns that one of the women Nucci had trouble with, Minn Matrone, keeps all her cash in her home. Paulie breaks into Minn's home to try to steal this money, but she catches him in the act. When he fails to talk his way out of it, he suffocates her with a pillow.

Always prone to overreact, Paulie disowned his mother. He eventually reconciled with her, only to learn that his own health was failing as well: He has prostate cancer.
In the episode "The Blue Comet", it is revealed that the Lupertazzi family has recruited Burt Gervasi to begin a rebellion against Tony. Burt goes to Silvio to join in a coup d'état against the boss, but Silvio responds by strangling him to death at his home a short time later.
As it turns out, several of Tony's closest allies betrayed him. However, the most consequential might be Carlo Gervasi. Carlo was a capo and top earner for Tony. In the series finale "Made In America," Tony discovers that Carlo became an informant and posed the greatest threat to Tony going to prison.
