Deimos was born a few years after Kratos, and bore a remarkable birthmark across his body. The two brothers grew up together under the watchful eye of their mother, Callisto, in Sparta, with dreams of joining the Spartan Army when they were older.
The Olympians Zeus, Athena, and Ares believed this warrior to be Deimos, Kratos' younger brother, who had a strange birthmark. Ares and Athena interrupted the childhood training of Kratos and Deimos in Sparta and kidnapped Deimos.
When they were young, Kratos told Deimos that he would always protect him, and for a while after his capture, Deimos believed it. That hope for Kratos' rescue eventually turned into resentment, and Deimos blamed his older brother for seemingly abandoning him to a life of torture at the hands of Thanatos.
Deimos was an incredibly powerful mortal as he was able to best Kratos, a god, in single combat armed with only a gauntlet. For this reason it is presumed that it's because of his demigod attributes due to being a son of Zeus just like his brother.

After he met - and defeated - Callisto in Atlantis, Kratos was compelled to find his brother at any cost. After he undertook a perilous journey that took him across Greece, Kratos finally found Deimos deep in the Temple of Thanatos, suspended from a tree.
Kratos' mother was freed from this predicament as she neared the end of her life in the Ghost of Sparta PSP game. Callisto took this opportunity to inform Kratos on her deathbed that he is Zeus' son. She promptly turned into a monster that Kratos had to kill afterward in a rather tragic boss fight.
