Sandy was pregnant, and her parents did not want her to marry Sodapop. They sent her to live with her grandmother, to keep her away from Sodapop and so she could have the baby in Florida. With Sandy's pregnancy, The Outsiders highlights Sodapop's sensitivity.
At the beginning of the novel, it is revealed that Sodapop is madly in love with his girlfriend Sandy. Although, the young lovebirds suddenly break up after Sandy tells Soda that she cheated on him and is pregnant with another man's baby.

Although Dally has a cold exterior, he has a soft spot for Johnny. Ponyboy explains that Dally does not love anyone except for Johnny. As soon as Johnny comes to him for help, he immediately concocts a plan to help protect him.
In The Outsiders, Dally wants to die because Johnny, the only person he truly loves, has died. Early in the text, Ponyboy describes Dally's life, explaining that he really has no family who cares for him.

Even though The Outsiders is fictional, the book is based in S.E. Hinton's hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hinton published the book in 1967 and the story takes place in the same time period. Though the book may feel like historical fiction for today's readers, it was a work of contemporary fiction when Hinton wrote it.
