Delbert Grady, better known as the Hotel Caretaker, is the overarching antagonist of Stephen King's 1977 novel The Shining, as well as its 1980 film adaptation and its 1997 miniseries adaptation. He was once a caretaker of the Overlook Hotel who went insane, murdered his family and committed suicide.
Jack becomes obsessed enough with the hotel's sordid past that he wants to write a book about it. He makes a long-distance call to the hotel's manager, Stuart Ullmann, and antagonizes him with this knowledge. Eventually, he goes mad thanks to the influence of the hotel's ghosts and attempts to kill Wendy and Danny.
Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining expands upon the theme of man as monster. The monster, Jack Torrence, is an example of the standard American male who provides for and protects his son and wife (Bingham 138).
Kubrick made a movie about insanity and how it often masks itself. That's the twist: The Shining isn't about a man who goes crazy. Jack Torrance doesn't go crazy. Jack Torrance is 100 percent insane from the first frame of the film5.
Jack takes his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and their son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), with him, but little do they know, the Overlook has some dark secrets of its own. Triggered by Danny's psychic abilities, the hotel releases some dangerous supernatural forces that break Jack's sanity β and the safety of Wendy and Danny.
Moments later, he would improvise the βHere's Johnny!β line, which was a reference to the intro of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Interestingly, Kubrick originally shot the scene with a fake door, but Nicholson β who once trained as a fire marshal β chopped it down too quickly.
In the novel, Danny is the Overlook's primary victim, and Jack Torrance is simply used as a conduit to get to Danny. The hotel wants Danny dead so that it can absorb his βshiningβ ability to add to the Overlook's plethora of dark energies, so it possesses Jack in his vulnerable state to try to kill Danny.

This suggests that Jack has not only become part of the hotel's history but is destined to repeat his malevolent actions and mental decline over and over again. That decline itself is also central to the narrative of the film, and Jack's appearance in the photograph symbolises his loss of identity.
Jack is offered the position of caretaker of the Overlook Hotel for the winter season, but during his time there, slowly falls into insanity due to cabin fever and the evil influence of the ghosts inhabiting the place, such as Lloyd the Bartender and the Hotel Caretaker, leading him to turn on his own family.

The woman in King's novel is Lorraine Massey, who used to seduce bellboys and engage in sexual acts with them. Lorraine was the wife of a prominent New York lawyer, but during her stay at the Overlook, she was with a younger man.
The hotel wanted young Danny to die inside its grounds so that it could feed on him, and after he unleashes the ghosts from their boxes, they start to feed on him as well.
Danny even manages to anticipate what is about to happen by writing βredrumβ on the bathroom door because this is where the murder will take place. The separation of Danny's alter ego voices into manifestations of Tony and Jack, through the presence / absence of his wagging finger, fits very well throughout the film.
After a corpse tries to strangle Danny in the infamous room 217 and Wendy and Jack see the resulting bruise on their son's neck, Wendy accuses Jack of abusing Danny.
We identified in previous chapters that Jack strangled Danny in the fatherly love scene and with these new details it would seem that he also sexually abused his son during this event.
It's made very clear from the beginning that he was a drunk and a violent husband and father. He seems to go to the closed down hotel in hopes to get sober, since there's no booze at the hotel when it's closed. However.. We also see how cold he treats his family during the ride up to the hotel.
