Deus Ex Machina is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside The Architect) of The Matrix film series. It is a central interface and ruler of 01/Machine City, the leader of the Machines and the one behind The Architect and the Agents.

Who killed Matrix?
At the end of the first movie in The Matrix trilogy, Neo is seemingly killed after an intense fight with Hugo Weaving's Agent Smith, a program created by the machines to police and control the Matrix.
Cypher justifying his decision to betray his friends and re-enter the Matrix. Cypher (born Reagan) was a redpill assigned to the Zion hovercraft Nebuchadnezzar under the command of Morpheus. He also betrayed the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar to aid Agent Smith and help him acquire information about the Zion mainframe.
Agent Smith had grown to hate the Matrix, something that by itself was going against the program's nature, and he wanted out no matter what. To Smith, humans were a virus, something disgusting, and the Matrix was a prison from which Smith had to escape.

Morpheus's crew travel into and out of the Matrix through phone lines. Neo cannot handle the immensity of the reality he was faced with; he proceeds to throw up and pass out.
According to Morpheus, the founder of Zion was the very first person to wake up from the Matrix simulation. Morpheus believed that person to have been the first and only “One,” and that Neo would be the second.
