Sean Maguire is a reluctant mentor at first, and it's not as if Will welcomes him to the job with open arms. But over time, he manages to win Will's trust and make progress with him.
Profession… a professor of psychology and part-time counselor at Bunker Hill Community College. Sean is a talented teacher and counselor but has to deal with the fact that many of his former classmates think he's wasting his potential.
Sean helps him see that he is a victim of his own inner demons and to accept that it is not his fault, causing him to break down in tears in Sean's arms. Will accepts one of the job offers arranged by Lambeau. Having helped Will manage his problems, Sean reconciles with Lambeau, deciding to take a sabbatical.
The abuse that Will underwent as a child from his foster father is not something that is revealed until a fair ways into the movie. However, the effects of this abuse can be observed from the very first scene.
Due to continuous abuse in a foster home as he was growing up, Will has developed Avoidant personality disorder, with post traumatic stress disorder, and possibly mood disorder of depressive symptoms.
Throughout the conversation, Sean repeatedly tells Will, "It's not your fault" [3]. The meaning behind the phrase is to convey to Will that he is not to blame for the abuse he suffered. It serves as a reassurance and a way to challenge the guilt and self-blame that Will has carried with him.

Sean's work with Will is all about his life beyond a single pursuit of mathematical success. He shows a keen interest in Will's life that goes beyond his mathematical potential. Sean barely speaks of Will's gift in his discussions; Sean has regard for Will beyond the mathematical genius side to his life.
When Sean Maguire repeats to Will Hunting, “It's not your fault,” why does Will finally say he's sorry? Will wasn't apologizing to Sean. Will was reverting to his childhood, to the moments in Will's life when he was being abused by his foster father.
Sean is genuinely compassionate and insightful and is excellent at therapeutic maneuvers. He manages to maintain boundaries with Will while still being authentic with him.
How many therapists does Will see in Good Will Hunting?
After a scrape with the law because of his impulse control problems, he is ordered by the court to see a therapist. Lambeau tries to find Will counseling by introducing him to three different therapists.
Good Will Hunting teaches us, however, that it is vital to recognise that qualifications do not define intelligence; you can, like Will, be the smartest person in the room but choose not to take opportunities, and instead view success as subjective.

The main character in this movie, Will Hunting has several psychological disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder, inferiority complex and attachment disorder. In terms of Psycho-analysis, he expresses his condition unconsciously by using defense mechanisms.

So now we have a title that suggests on one level that Will Hunting is good and that Will hunts with/for goodwill. In both cases, the title is accurate because it reminds us that there are good and bad ways to hunt for meaning in life, and Will is following the good one (most of the time).
In the movie, Good Will Hunting (1997), a mathematics professor challenges his students to draw all Homeomorphically Irreducible Trees of Order Ten, that is, a collection of trees each having ten dots connected by lines.
The line is a response to the revelation of abuse Will endured as a child. At first, Will is dismissive of the statement, but as his therapist steadily repeats “It's not your fault,” he becomes increasingly agitated. Finally, he erupts into emotion, tearfully allowing the meaning of the words to sink in.

The movie ends as Chuckie poignantly discovers, in fulfillment of his own long-standing wish, that Will has left for a better life. Will is then shown starting his life-affirming drive to California for a new beginning with Skylar and a leap into an unpredictable future.
Nevertheless, Good Will Hunting is a wonderful exploration of the flaws in the American education system, the isolation of academia, and the personal journey of a young man who learns to accept himself and relate to the people who care for him.
