Throughout the movie, it is implied that Philip and his secretary Yvonne (Nicole Kidman) have romantic feelings for each other. While Kidman's character does have a real-life equivalent, there is no evidence they were ever romantically involved.
The Upside true story reveals that the real-life paragliding accident happened in the Savoyard reliefs of Mont Bisanne in the Swiss Alps in 1993 when Philippe was 42. He had been distracted by thoughts of the workers he had laid off and hadn't been paying enough attention to what he was doing. As a result, he crashed.
Dell and Philip begin to bond, and Philip tells Dell that he was paralyzed in a paragliding accident, and reveals the pain of losing his wife. Dell adjusts to caring for Philip, even modifying his wheelchair, and is introduced to opera and modern art; he creates his own painting, which Philip displays in the penthouse.

Did Kevin Hart really paraglide in The Upside?
Unlike Cranston, Hart did not fly in any of the scenes. As a result, filming Hart “paragliding” required some creativity, including a flying rig that hung from a crane, a shade structure simulating the glider's canopy, and a large fan for wind.
The staff clamor around Philip to help him as he insists he can't feel a thing. Dell goes to pick Philip up and return him home, but Philip chews Dell out for arranging the whole thing with Lily since he now feels like a fool. Philip then fires Dell.

But after caring for Phillip, Dell realizes that there are much more important things in life. He starts caring for his ex-girlfriend and becomes more present in his son's life. By the end of the film, Dell is a genuine, caring person and Phillip is a man happy to be alive.
This is a remake of the French film The Intouchables (2011). In Germany and The Netherlands, it was the most successful French film in history. The same story has also been filmed as the Argentinian film Inseparables (2016).
Why does Philip decide to hire Dell as his caregiver?
He decides to hire a caregiver to help him navigate a life with the physical and emotional challenges he faces daily. This is where Kevin Hart (Dell) enters. Dell, a paroled convict in need of a job, has to get signatures to satisfy his parole officer's requirements.
Philippe di Borgo became a quadriplegic in 1993 following a paragliding accident. Because of his disability, he attempted to commit suicide by wrapping an oxygen tube around his neck. In July 2012, he was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour. Pozzo di Borgo died on 1 June 2023, at the age of 72.
With no way out, Will took shelter in the Upside Down's version of Castle Byers. As his strength grew weaker, the Demogorgon abducted Will while unconscious. His body was taken over by vines which could have been keeping him alive for the Demogorgon to feed on later, but he was soon rescued by Joyce and Hopper.
One of the most original, creative and technically accomplished films of our time, Upside Down is a pure delight. Unfortunately, there's absolutely no character development, tossing a poorly realized and mundane love story at us that's furthered only by its nicely varnished visuals.

The Upside appeals to mass audience erogenous zones (bankable star, humor, candy-coating issues) that's unapologetically feel-good while offering award season relief. It's a little long. The real anchor for the movie is their relationship, but it's super funny.
Yvonne's opinion about Dell is that he is not qualified for the job since he has never handled such a job before. Yvonne finds Dell to be a scare for her that given the vulnerability of Philip's condition, Philip is being assisted now in the wrong hands for the job.

The Intouchables is clearly the more well-respected film (74% on Rotten Tomatoes versus an undeserved 39%), but The Upside is actually quite a successful remake. Some may bristle at recreating a film just so we English-speakers don't have to read subtitles, but the filmmakers did a good job with it.
