The identical twin sisters, spirits of two children murdered by the previous caretaker Delbert Grady, are the subject of one of the movie's most haunting scenes.
He is informed by the hotel manager that the previous caretaker, Delbert Grady, killed his entire family inside the hotel. Specifically, Grady “murdered the little girls with a hatchet, his wife with a shotgun, and himself the same way.” As Jack later learns, the Overlook has a long and ghastly history.
The family has to care for the hotel for the winter, but they cannot leave the mountainous area. In this isolation every day becomes the same for Jack as his writer's block becomes quotidian. The combination of isolation, monotony, creative frustration, and supernatural forces extract Jack's insanity.
So on one level the twins represent Danny, perhaps accompanied by his imaginary friend. Rather than seeing the past, he is anticipating his own potential murder / abuse. He also saw the twins in his first shining vision, while looking into a mirror.
The two Gradys, along with the many mirrors in The Shining, have been interpreted as being mirrors of Jack the husband and father and Jack the mysterious man in the 1920s photo at the end of the movie, meaning Jack is two people (hence why Delbert Grady's line about how Jack has “always been the caretaker”).

Why did Grady say Jack was always the caretaker?
This argument would also seem to support Grady's claim to Jack that he has "always" been the caretaker; if Jack is the reincarnation of the caretaker from the 1920s, it would suggest that the hotel continuously "reanimates" its 1921 guests, bringing them back in different guises; hence, just as Delbert was brought back ...
Moments later, he would improvise the “Here's Johnny!” line, which was a reference to the intro of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Interestingly, Kubrick originally shot the scene with a fake door, but Nicholson – who once trained as a fire marshal – chopped it down too quickly.
Danny Torrance is introduced in The Shining as the five-year-old son of Jack and Wendy Torrance. He has psychic powers that fellow psychic Dick Halloran calls “shining” – he can read people's thoughts, communicate telepathically with others who “shine”, and has frequent, frightening prophetic visions.
Danny tries to stay away from Room 237, but curiosity gets the better of him, and Mrs. Massey assaults him before he's able to get away. It further explains how Mrs. Massey is able to appear to Danny later in life.
It's likely that the twins, despite their sinister appearance, are trying to help Danny. After all, it's explained that they were killed after trying to burn down the Overlook; the girls were aware of the hotel's dark power and tried to put an end to it.
What mental illness does Jack have in The Shining?
There are several types of schizophrenia experienced by Jack Torrance, including schizophrenic simplex, schizophrenic hebephrenic, schizophrenic catatonic and schizophrenic paranoid.
The woman in King's novel is Lorraine Massey, who used to seduce bellboys and engage in sexual acts with them. Lorraine was the wife of a prominent New York lawyer, but during her stay at the Overlook, she was with a younger man.
Room 237 is basically a dream logic version of the Torrance apartment and the neck injuries inflicted upon Danny for having woken his father up. One of the biggest giveaway's that Jack strangled Danny is a shot in which Jack walks down a mustard coloured hallway before switching on the lights of the Gold Room.

The hotel wanted young Danny to die inside its grounds so that it could feed on him, and after he unleashes the ghosts from their boxes, they start to feed on him as well.
In the novel, Danny is the Overlook's primary victim, and Jack Torrance is simply used as a conduit to get to Danny. The hotel wants Danny dead so that it can absorb his “shining” ability to add to the Overlook's plethora of dark energies, so it possesses Jack in his vulnerable state to try to kill Danny.
Wendy asks Danny why he locked the door, and he says that Tony told him to. Danny was just brushing his teeth, thinking about reading, and he saw Tony in the mirror. Danny's vision had something to do with a timer, which also hearkens to Jack's experience with George Hatfield.
Danny Torrance has a vision of the word REDRUM appearing on a wall, where it then transforms into the word MURDER, directly below the word REDRUM. He is aware of this as he saw this in a vision before arriving at the Overlook Hotel.
This further confirms that the powers known as "the Shine" may well be hereditary, and Danny Torrance's most likely came from Jack, who appears to be particularly sensitive to the Overlook Hotel's mental probing.

It's made very clear from the beginning that he was a drunk and a violent husband and father. He seems to go to the closed down hotel in hopes to get sober, since there's no booze at the hotel when it's closed. However.. We also see how cold he treats his family during the ride up to the hotel.
