One of his most vile acts of betrayal in Harry's eyes was the outright murder of Albus Dumbledore — in fact, even fans were left angry and confused about this incident. Right up until the last moments of his life, Severus Snape treated Harry with disdain because of his resemblance to James Potter.
However, Draco was ordered by Voldemort to kill Dumbledore. Lestrange saw this as an opportunity to test Snape's loyalty and while making this vow to always watch over Draco, Lestrange forced Snape to agree to killing Dumbledore himself in case the youngster was unable to do so.
These attempts on Albus Dumbledore's life were the events that led up to the Battle of the Astronomy Tower on 30 June 1997. In the action, Dumbledore was killed by Severus Snape and not the primary perpetrator of the plot, Draco Malfoy.
However, nobody ever said it is a rule. It is where the movies go a little further than the books. We are referring to the emotional and devastating scene in the sixth installment Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where Snape kills Dumbledore with Avada Kedavra.
Dumbledore was dying of a curse set by Voldemort, and only had a few weeks to live. If he died of the curse, that meant Voldemort had killed him and would get the mastery of the Elder Wand. If he killed himself, there was a possibility the Wand would still interpret that as Voldemort's victory.

Why is Snape the half-blood prince?
Family. Snape's family background is mostly shown in flashbacks during the course of the last three novels. Snape was born to Eileen Prince, a witch, and Tobias Snape, a Muggle, making him a half-blood (hence the name, "Half-Blood Prince").
He concludes that, because Snape killed Dumbledore, the Elder Wand belongs to him. Voldemort knew he couldn't cast Avada Kedavra with the Elder Wand to kill its master. Voldemort had to kill Snape because he needed the wand's allegiance to switch.

Did McGonagall know Snape was going to kill Dumbledore?
McGonagall eventually hired Neville as the new Herbology professor due to his gifts in the subject, and elected him as the new Head of Gryffindor House. McGonagall later learned that Snape was secretly Harry's protector and had killed Dumbledore at Dumbledore's request.

For the second time in Voldemort's life, the unforgivable curse rebounded on him, as the Elder Wand wouldn't kill its master. Since Harry and his friends had already destroyed all of Voldemort's Horcruxes, this finally ended Lord Voldemort's life, with Harry finally defeating the Dark Lord.
After instructing Harry to take the silvery memories captured in his tears, the dying professor begged the boy to look at him. Then, he delivered his final line: "You have your mother's eyes." This line wasn't included in the book version of this scene, where "look at me" were Snape's final words.
He also knew Severus would do what he could to protect the children of Hogwarts. Snape knew he likely wasn't going to survive serving Voldemort, but the trust Dumbledore gave him went both ways. Dumbledore trusted that Harry Potter could defeat the Dark Lord, and thus Snape did what he could to help him.
Although it is not confirmed to have been the Killing Curse, it is highly likely that Ron attempted to kill Voldemort's snake, and last Horcrux, Nagini, with Avada Kedavra. This is because, in the movies, Ron can be seen firing out a green spell at the snake, and it looks just like the Killing Curse.
The Killing Curse is a spell that causes instantaneous death and is one of the three Unforgivable Curses. Its incantation is Avada Kedavra. The only known counter-spell is sacrificial protection, which uses the magic of love. However, one may dodge the green bolt or block it with a physical barrier.
The Killing Curse was created in the early Middle Ages by Dark witches and wizards. Primarily, the curse was used to quickly slay opponents during a duel. In 1707, the Wizards' Council was restructured into the Ministry of Magic, which allowed for more strict restrictions on certain types of magic.
The reason Voldemort targeted Harry and killed his parents was due to a prophecy that predicted his downfall. The prophecy mentioned that the person who could vanquish Voldemort would be born in July to parents who had defied him three times and would have powers that Voldemort could not understand.
At this point, McGonagall begins to gain the upper hand as it becomes clear he cannot further transfigure or counter her attack, so the only way he avoids it is by taking refuge behind a suit of armour that he forces in front of him.
Notably, Voldemort appeared to be entirely unaware of this split, as he later created a seventh Horcrux in his quest to have six, and continued to target Harry Potter despite him now holding part of Voldemort's own soul.
He promised to protect Draco Malfoy from harm and guide him whilst he attempted to perform the task the Dark Lord had asked him to do: to kill Albus Dumbledore. Snape was actually a double agent working for Dumbledore, who requested Snape to kill him anyway to spare him of a painful and humiliating death.
Following Albus Dumbledore's death, Professor McGonagall took over as the Headmistress of Hogwarts. She remained at Hogwarts after Lord Voldemort took over and appointed Severus Snape as the acting Headmaster.
