Although Nicholson initially suggested that Jessica Lange would be a better fit for the role of Wendy, Shelley Duvall knew early that she was the one cast for the role (Nicholson would work with Lange on his next movie, The Postman Always Rings Twice).

The shining connects virtually every major character from Doctor Sleep back to The Shining, and vice versa. Related to that is Dan's nickname in both books - “Doc.” Danny's parents call him Doc in The Shining, in reference to Bugs Bunny's famous catchphrase.
Dick unknowingly gave his life so that Danny could live, and so at the end of Doctor Sleep it makes sense that Danny then gives his life so that Abra—this young gifted girl who reached out to him for help—can live on.

In the book, the man dressed in a suit is actually Horace Derwent, the mysterious owner of the Overlook Hotel, and the man in the costume (which is a dog in the book) is Roger, a one-time lover of his. The novel provides Roger and Horace's story as an example of atrocities that have happened in the hotel.
After a corpse tries to strangle Danny in the infamous room 217 and Wendy and Jack see the resulting bruise on their son's neck, Wendy accuses Jack of abusing Danny.
Part of these efforts is what sees Danny Torrance earn the nickname of "Doctor Sleep." While working as an orderly at a hospice facility, Dan proves to have a knack for calming patients in their last minutes, thanks in part to his shining abilities.
How many years between The Shining and Doctor Sleep?
Directed by Mike Flanagan — the filmmaker behind OCULUS, HUSH and OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL — the upcoming film is set about 40 years after the events of THE SHINING and is based on the 2013 book of the same name written by Stephen King.
Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.” Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan's own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra's soul and survival.
So on one level the twins represent Danny, perhaps accompanied by his imaginary friend. Rather than seeing the past, he is anticipating his own potential murder / abuse. He also saw the twins in his first shining vision, while looking into a mirror.
Wendy asks Danny why he locked the door, and he says that Tony told him to. Danny was just brushing his teeth, thinking about reading, and he saw Tony in the mirror. Danny's vision had something to do with a timer, which also hearkens to Jack's experience with George Hatfield.
Danny even manages to anticipate what is about to happen by writing “redrum” on the bathroom door because this is where the murder will take place. The separation of Danny's alter ego voices into manifestations of Tony and Jack, through the presence / absence of his wagging finger, fits very well throughout the film.
In The Shining, room 217 is the room that is focused on as having a dark history and being a haunted room due to the tragedy of Mrs. Massey. Danny is warned not to enter this room and anyone who enters the room has bizarre encounters.
