The movie reveals that June's supposedly dead father, James, is behind the kidnapping of her mother, Grace, in his attempt to reunite with his daughter.
The leader of the renegade Indians is a brujo, or witch, who can put curses on his enemies and poison them with powders or snake venom. He's played by Eric Schweig, who ably serves the purpose the story requires of him: To scare the bejeezers out of the audience.
On the search for her mother Grace, June soon finds out that not everything is as it seems. She discovers that her mum's boyfriend, Kevin, was a con-artist who attempted to swindle money from Grace. She also finds out her father James, who she thought was dead, is still alive and that her mum's name isn't really Grace.
James tries to leave with June, but Grace fatally stabs him in the neck with a shard of broken glass. James locks them inside the room again and attempts to search for a nearby hospital on his computer, but dies while doing so.
Despite its lifelike premise and innovative use of modern technologies in its storytelling, Missing is not based on a true story. The film and its plot are completely fictional works that were conceptualized and written by Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty.
Eventually the pair discover that Oliver was killed shortly after his disappearance, but no one survives who can tell them what happened to his body. Emily makes a fresh start by remarrying, but Tony cannot accept that Oliver is dead, and continues to search.

James tried to capture June to leave, but a revived Grace stabs him in the neck with a shard of glass. James tries to call the hospital but dies.
Although the BBC drama is not based directly on recent events, the plot of The Missing echoes real-life cases such as that of Madeleine McCann. “Whatever the BBC and the writers say, there are going to be parallels there in cases we have all heard about.
The latest episode saw Adam Gettrick (Derek Riddell), the army's press liaison officer, revealed as the man who kidnapped Alice Webster and Sophie Giroux. It was poor unfortunate Jorn Lenhart (Florian Bartholomäi) who discovered the truth, only for Gettrick to brutally murder him with an electric drill.
After 'escaping' from her captor, Sophie decided to go and live with Alice's family in Germany rather than her own in France. Clearly uncomfortable with pretending to be someone else, Sophie then faked her own (Alice's) death in the shed.
Season 2 of The Missing is connected to Season 1 in two ways, but they're slight enough so as not to deter new viewers. One, it features the same detective, Julian Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo), and in the second instance, it acts as a narrative inversion of that first season's story.
Missing has a very happy ending in which Sarah and June make it back alive after going through hell in the form of James coming back from the past to harm them somehow. June's attitude is much more mature, and her connection with her mother seems to be more solid than ever.
Is Missing a horror film? No it is not. It is at its heart a very well-made thriller, but that doesn't mean it won't have you at the edge of your seat.
