Exposure to terrifying acts like stories of demonic possession or alien infestation can be stimulating both mentally and physically. These experiences can give rise to both negative feelings, such as fear or anxiety, and positive feelings, such as excitement or joy.
“Horror stories do different things to different people. In some cases, they act as cautionary tales; in others, they allow us to explore things that feel transgressive and gives us a safe space to do that,” Dr Marshall said.

Research indicates that people lower in the trait of empathy tend to enjoy horror movies because they are less impacted by the suffering depicted onscreen.
People enjoy watching scary movies because it provides them with a safe, controlled environment to experience fear and adrenaline. It also allows them to explore the unknown and challenge their own fears. Additionally, it can be a great way to bond with friends by watching a horror movie together.
The science is pretty consistent. Study after study finds that males are slightly more likely than females to enjoy horror. For example, a recent study—conducted by myself, the media researcher Jens Kjeldgaard-Christiansen, and the personality psychologist John A. Johnson—found such a slight difference.
Perhaps for the same reason most people like horror movies, regardless of gender: It's fun to be scared, even when (and maybe because) the world can be scary. A deeper answer may be found in the question itself: Fear is familiar to women, and because of that accessible.
Why do I feel weird after watching a horror movie?

Different types of psychopathy are related to horror movie preference as well as things like violent sports (and an aversion to romance, pop music and non-violent sports). However, you don't need to be a psychopath to enjoy horror cinema.
Often, all that was needed was an outpouring of emotion, whether that's fear, thrill, or a good cry. Horror can help people access those hard-to-reach emotions and provide a way to express them.
Scary movies, books and podcasts can help people think through how they would respond to threats and prepare them for worst-case scenarios, say experts who study the psychology of fear.
"They use those to elicit our startle response which is rapid heart rate, abnormal breathing," Bensen said. A startle response can also make a person or an animal tense up, or even duck for cover. The response itself is evolutionary, helping to detect a potential threat. A lion's roar is an example.
While there is no chapter and verse in Scripture saying horror movies are sinful for Christians to watch; it would be incredibly unwise and even dangerous for believers to partake in films that make light of the demonic and make it look entertaining.
