What is the point of the Cinnabon in Better Call Saul?
The fact that Saul Goodman is spending his time after Breaking Bad managing a the Better Call Saul Cinnabon in Omaha is a direct callback to the final conversation had between Saul and Walter White before they parted ways for good.
He's clearly terrified of having his cover blown, and the stress of being found out combined with the fact that his inner Saul wants to escape triggered a panic attack/heart attack on the floor of a Cinabbon.
After Ed Galbraith gave Saul Goodman a new life and identity, Saul (then known as Gene Takavic) got a job working at the Cinnabon store located in Omaha, where he worked for several months.
He goes from young lawyer Jimmy McGill to the corrupt Saul Goodman and then finally to Gene Takovic, the persona he adopts to avoid the law after the events of Breaking Bad. Jimmy McGill's character defies categories, capturing the complexity of personal development shaped by circumstances and personal choices.
Even though Jimmy tries to be optimistic in his talk with Kim, the reality is that he received an 86-year sentence for his crimes in Breaking Bad. This was designed to give Jimmy no way out since he fully confessed to everything in Better Call Saul's finale, which means any future deals are off the table.
Despite displaying several features of antisocial personality disorder (stealing from his family, a history of conning people and defying authority), he can be compassionate and is guided by an idiosyncratic code of ethics.
However, the series also works as a sequel to the original series, with it occasionally giving glimpses into the post-Breaking Bad timeline. As it turns out, Saul Goodman fled Albuquerque and is now living in Nebraska under a new identity as a Cinnabon manager named Gene Takovic.
The episode's present-day story is simple enough: Gene finally gets caught (inside a dumpster, fittingly enough, as Marie Schrader points out). Then Saul cuts himself a ridiculously favorable plea deal by previewing his line of jury-deadlocking BS for a hotshot prosecutor with a perfect case record.
Gene offers Jeff a chance to enter "the game" by burgling a department store in the mall where Gene works in exchange for Jeff's silence about Gene's true identity.
Did Better Call Saul get permission from Cinnabon?
But Cinnabon didn't just give permission for “Better Call Saul” to use its name and logo. In helping to add a more authentic touch to the series, actual Cinnabon operations employees have been present during every Cinnabon-set scene on “Better Call Saul” since the show's inception.
He also ran petty scams including the "fake Rolex" with the help of his partner-in-crime Marco Pasternak. Jimmy began to use the alias "Saul Goodman", a play on the phrase "It's all good, man". He initially used it as a fake name when performing his scams with Marco.
He instead chose to end the series with the two parting in the prison yard to deal with the likely truth that Saul will be incarcerated for the rest of his life. Gould also said that whether Kim would return to visit Saul again was up to the audience to decide.
Jeff recognizes Jimmy McGill as Saul Goodman while Jimmy was under his Gene Takavic identity in Omaha. Jeff approaches Jimmy on his lunchbreak with a friend and asks Jimmy to do his iconic "Better Call Saul!" catchphrase and point.
In the end, Saul muses out loud; he doesn't need to convince the entire jury. He only needs one juror to believe his story. The deliberation led to his sentence getting reduced to 7 years. As a bonus, he is remanded to the cozy prison in North Carolina; well, cozy for a prison.
In drafting Marion (Carol Burnett) to bail out Jeff, Gene tripped the wrong curiosity wires in that sharp, not-to-be-underestimated Marion. With the help of Ask Jeeves, she realized that he was actually Albuquerque conman Saul Goodman.
The confrontation contributes to Kim's breakdown, but it isn't the sole reason she hysterically cries on the bus. More than that, it is the culmination of guilt, grief, and the realization that whatever life she built in Albuquerque really is gone.
The latter is the Rusty Nail Gene Takovic drinks after a long day at Cinnabon. Composed of Scotch and Drambuie, the beverage has a reputation for appealing to disgruntled older men. This aptly represents Saul Goodman's new identity, which is much less lively than his lawyer persona.
Distraught by Howard Hamlin's murder and her not inconsiderable part in it, Kim quits her job as a lawyer and breaks off her marriage with Jimmy, rightly pointing out the poisonous nature of their partnership. This breakup explains why Kim doesn't appear in Breaking Bad.
Kim's effortless ability to spin untruths and manipulate people, and her glee in doing so, all proves too much for her. She tells Jimmy that they are bad for one another—that the chaos they've created together is too much for her conscience, despite having “the time of [her] life” doing it.
It's clear in the show that the symptoms are real and debilitating — but it's also clear that they're mostly in Chuck's head. EHS, the show implies, is simply a manifestation of Chuck's mental illness.
Although in the first season it seemed that he was initially supportive of Jimmy, Chuck harbored resentful feelings toward him because of his conman past and charisma, in addition to Jimmy's approach to his career. From the second season onward, Chuck transforms into Jimmy's nemesis.
That said, when a show is good, you accept certain practical realities. On the aging flip side, consider all the wigs Bob Odenkirk has had to wear to play younger versions of Jimmy McGill.
