Gothel is the main antagonist in Tangled. She kidnapped baby Rapunzel to get the magical power of Rapunzel's golden hair. Its magic can make people young but when the hair is cut, it will lose its power. So instead, she had to kidnap baby Rapunzel to make herself young.

The story of Barbara was that she was so beautiful that her father felt he had to lock her in a tower to protect her. She became a Christian, which made her father, a Pagan, so upset that he beheaded her.
If Gothel, however, loved her back is debatable. Cleverly, through Mother Gothel's commands, the brothers make it seem as if Flynn was escaping with the crown. This tricks Rapunzel into believing he abandoned her, trading her and her magic hair for the crown.
Gothel fatally stabs Flynn upon his arrival and attempts to leave with Rapunzel, who offers to go willingly with her if she can heal Flynn. Gothel reluctantly releases her. However, Flynn unexpectedly cuts Rapunzel's hair, causing it to lose its magic and turn brown.
