It makes sense for the movie version of Mike, who is obsessed and a little delusional, to mislead everyone (including himself) about the Ritual of Chüd. Unfortunately, it makes him into a bit of a villain, as he lied to his friends and nearly led to everyone's deaths.
However, It then breaks out and it's revealed that Mike lied: The Native Americans who first attempted to trap It were all slaughtered by It because they didn't truly believe the ritual would work.
To top it off, while they do eventually manage to defeat Pennywise, no thanks to the ritual, Eddie is killed, completely devastating Richie. But Mike survives IT Chapter 2, and actually gets to leave Derry for a better life in the end, seemingly free of consequences for his insanely selfish choice.
It's symbolic of all the other Losers too, each of whom had to overcome their worst fears and memories, taking away the power IT held over them and at the same time dealing with the childhood traumas they'd forgotten but not truly learned to cope with.

The biggest gut-punch in the whole movie, Eddie Kaspbrak, aka Eds, aka Eddie Spaghetti, dies after Pennywise stabs him in the chest with one of his giant spider-claws.
In the novel, It's origins are nebulous. He took the form of a clown most frequently, Mr. Bob Gray or Pennywise, but his true form is an ancient eldritch entity from another universe who landed in the town that would become Derry by way of an asteroid and first awoke in 1715.

In their final battle, the Losers' Club was able to kill Pennywise by reducing him to a child-like form as they overcame their fears. In the moments before Pennywise died, his fear is reminiscent of Georgie's own, therefore closing the cyclical nature of Pennywise's murders.
