Why didn t Pinocchio turn into a real boy in the remake?
In keeping with del Toro's famous love for 'monsters' of all shapes and sizes, his Pinocchio does not become a 'real boy'. Instead, the film asserts that he was a real boy all along. “It's Pinocchio that transforms the people around him, not transforms himself to please,” del Toro told Skip Intro.
The film begins during World War I, circa 1917/1918, in which Carlo, Geppetto's son, is killed when a rocket is dropped on the church in their small village. Though it's unclear how many years pass after that, Pinocchio's main story is set in the intervening years, likely in the late 1920s or early 1930s.
Pinocchio could only have told 13 lies before his nose became so long his neck would have broken, scientists have concluded. The wooden puppet, created by Italian author Carlo Collodi in 1883, was prone to tall tales and his nose would double in length for each lie.
