Rachel Dawes was Bruce Wayne's childhood friend and love interest who served as Gotham City's assistant district attorney and fought against corruption in the city. Before her death at the hands of the Joker, she was one of the few people who knew the Batman's true identity.
Towards the end of the film, Rachel visits the remains of Wayne Manor, finding Bruce and Alfred sorting through the wreckage. She and Bruce share a kiss, but she tells him that they cannot be together until Gotham no longer needs Batman, now fully aware of his secret.
While there's no doubt that the Joker tricked Batman into choosing who would die and thus lied about where Rachel was, there's another reason why the Joker had Batman save Harvey Dent.
According to Nolan, there was no deeper motivation behind recasting the role — Holmes simply wasn't available. "Katie wasn't available for the role, which I wasn't very happy about, but these things happen, and I was very, very fortunate that Maggie [Gyllenhaal] was able to take it over," the filmmaker said.

Did Rachel know that Bruce was Batman?
After being saved from a gang of Arkham's inmates by Batman, Rachel asks who he is. He tells her "it's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me", which is what she had said to Bruce earlier, making her realize that Bruce Wayne is Batman.
Their history on the Earth-Two continuity developed to the point where Catwoman reformed and Batman admitted his love for her, formally marrying shortly after and having a daughter, Helena Wayne, who later became the Huntress.
She explains in the letter that because she loves Harvey and thinks that Bruce will not be able to give up his life as Batman, she is going to marry Harvey (but that she will always love Bruce and will remain his friend).
I'm going to marry Harvey Dent. I love him, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him. When I told you that if Gotham no longer needed Batman we could be together, I meant it. But now I'm sure the day won't come when *you* no longer need Batman.
Should the flipped coin land on the unblemished side, the Joker would live. However, should it fall on the burnt half, he would die. The flip of the coin lands in the Joker's favor, however, and Dent lets the man leave.
He knew Jason was killing people, and Batman couldn't live with the shame of knowing that he had unintentionally created a deadlier version of Joe Chill. This explains the tragedy of what kept Batman away but also highlights his own selfishness and irresponsibility.
But while Batman has had his fair share of love interests over the decades, none can truly compete with Selina Kyle. Batman's original rivalry with Catwoman has evolved into a true love story between the Cat and the Bat. They're even a married couple now.
Unsurprisingly, Batman's most popular love interest is the antihero and occasional villain Catwoman. Even though they often stand on opposite sides of the law, Batman and Catwoman still understand each other.
Alfred burns the letter because it's the kindest thing to do. Already grieving for his lost love, learning that Rachel planned to ditch him for Harvey Dent would offer no solace to Bruce, and only deepen his depression.
The Joker knew Batman would choose her after seeing him dive out of a window for her, so he intentionally mixed up the locations of the two. This was just another way for the Joker to hurt Batman.

Alfred told Bruce about the letter that Rachel left for him, which stated that they wouldn't end up together. In The Dark Knight Rises, Alfred read and then burned the letter. He didn't want it to cause Bruce any pain, but this turned out to be a mistake as Bruce didn't believe him after he'd confessed.
Harvey became Two-Face due to a combination of Maroni's scarring, untreated mental illness, marital stress and his own personal choices. But one has to wonder if Batman and Gordon ever lay awake at night haunted by the role they played in Harvey's downfall.
Happy with his life and how everything just seemed to be falling into place for his professional and personal life. Although his turn to become the villain would not be well known and his death was used to highlight the good side and not the monster that he had become.
