Ruth DeWitt Bukater, Rose's mother, insisted that Rose marry a rich and wealthy man that maintained a high social status so that she and Rose could also maintain their high social status after falling into bad debt problems after Rose's father died.
Rose is a 17-year-old girl from Philadelphia, who is forced into an engagement to 30-year-old Cal Hockley so she and her mother, Ruth, can maintain their high-class status after her father's death had left the family debt-ridden. Rose boards Titanic with Cal and Ruth, as a first-class passenger, and meets Jack.
Although Rose changed her name to “Dawson” to honor Jack, used this name during her acting career, and ultimately revealed she never got over Jack, she moved on and got married at some point in her life.
Caledon Nathan Hockley (often shortened to Cal, 1882-1929, age 47) is Rose's fiance and the main antagonist of Titanic. He was supposed to have married Rose DeWitt Bukater when they arrived in Philadelphia, yet her hatred for him and her romance with Jack Dawson kept them apart.
