It's a sign of how rushed this episode really was. I agree the show should've ended with an "it's not the destination, it's the journey" theme, but this was too abrupt. It's a hackwritten and completely unfulfilling conclusion to the Voyager story. This sucks, because the rest of the series is so good!

By the time of the series finale, "Endgame", The Doctor had managed to remove the implant, allowing Seven to pursue a relationship with Chakotay. The alternative future seen at the start of the episode showed that Seven and Chakotay were eventually married, but she died while Voyager was still travelling home.
A Chakotay cameo would, therefore, have distracted from the overall story of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) confronting the trauma of his past. Chakotay being at the head of a fascist government also doesn't fit with his character, as he was a member of the Maquis, which fought against Cardassian oppression.
While on NBC, Star Trek's Nielsen ratings were low and the network canceled it after three seasons and 79 episodes. In the United Kingdom the series was not broadcast until July 12, 1969, coinciding with the Apollo 11 mission to land the first humans on the Moon.
The showrunners reluctantly terminated Lien's contract as a member of Voyager's main cast due to unresolved personal issues that affected her performance. Mulgrew kept active in doing voice-over work for video games, most notably voicing the mysterious Flemeth in the Dragon Age video game series, a role she described as "delicious". Mulgrew returned to television in 2006, guest-starring in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
