The second nun chooses to hang herself to escape the demon's clutches and sacrifices herself to protect the key. The next morning, a French-Canadian farmer, affectionately called Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet), arrives at the abbey, spotting the hung corpse and realizing the ground he stands on is not so sacred.
Sister Victoria had in fact been the last nun in that abbey and had sacrificed herself to stop Valak from possessing her. Theorizing that Valak can only be stopped if they seal the rift again with the blood of Christ from the reliquary the same way the knights did, the trio retrieves the vial with Victoria's key.
It is also revealed that all the nuns in the abbey have actually been killed by Valak, and the last remaining nun chose death over getting possessed by Valak. The endgame of Valak is to destroy the Blood of Christ and escape the abbey.
Valak tries to kill Irene by setting her on fire, but Irene miraculously survives thanks to her faith and her connection to Saint Lucy. Irene and Debra use their prayers to turn the wine barrels in the chapel into the blood of Christ, which burns Valak and sends it back to hell.
All that stands in the demon nun's way is Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga). Valak is after the eyes of Saint Lucy, patron saint of the blind, in order to restore the power that was taken from the demon when it was an angel rejected by God.
Irene uses the relic against Maurice, but he grabs it, causing Valak to appear. Similar to Father Noiret, Valak lifts Irene in the air and sets her ablaze. Irene does not burn as Valak realizes she is a descendant of St. Lucy, able to harness the same power associated with the relic.
