The failure of the movie is the story, the plot. Many reviewers at the time of release went into its problems 1 . One problem that many have pointed out is that the plot is powered by characters doing stupid things, like (literally) running in the wrong direction.
But for crying out loud the plot is thin as paper and the writing is very very bad. None of the characters are acting in a logical way. There is no explainable motivations behind their actions and the story behind the alien race contradicts itself.
