Reluctantly, Marlin lets go of the whale's tongue, which then leads to the two being blown outside the whale through a blowhole. It's revealed that the whale transported the two to Sydney, and that Dory did in fact understand whale language.
There, they find Nemo, apparently dead (Nemo was actually faking it in an attempt to escape). Saddened, Marlin leaves for home, leaving Dory behind despite her claims that her memory is better with him.
She is able to put Marlin first despite his insensitivity to her feelings because she genuinely cares about helping, just as a hero would. Dory's positive outlook on life and trust in those around her is the only thing that got the two of them through the journey to find Nemo.
It is revealed in Finding Dory that Dory's ability to 'speak whale' in Finding Nemo was taught to her by her friend Destiny the whale shark. However, whale sharks aren't real whales and thus do not communicate like whales, so she never could have taught Dory in the first place.

Marlin helps represent the struggle with chronic anxiety, and the effect it has on relationships.
