An Avox is a person who has had their tongue cut out, rendering them mute, as punishment for being a rebel, traitor, or deserter. Most Avoxes will have been hunted and caught by the Peacekeepers of their respective districts or the Capitol.
Pollux is an Avox cameraman who filmed Katniss Everdeen in the District 13 propos. As an Avox, he was charged for rebellion, and therefore forced to perform slave work.
Pollux is an Avox, or a mute; he lost his voice as punishment for a crime and had to serve as a mute servant in the Capitol for years. We see his pain and joy when he cries as Katniss and the mockingjays sing to each other during a propo.
Before the girl was taken, she locked eyes with Katniss and called out for help, and Katniss still feels guilty for doing nothing to help her. Katniss was a bystander, as if watching the Hunger Games herself. She doesn't tell Peeta this part, though, and she wonders if the girl will enjoy watching her die.
For crimes deemed treasonous, the avox are hunted down by Peacekeepers. Once caught, they have their tongues cut out. This prevents them from speaking out. They can no longer arouse those around them to rebellion.

How did Peeta help Katniss with the Avox girl?
Haymitch explains that an Avox is someone who committed a crime and had their tongue cut out. Katniss says it must be a mistake, and Peeta covers for her by saying the Avox girl resembles someone from there school.
The redheaded Avox comes in and wipes Katniss's face and hands, which she cut on a broken dish. Katniss says she should have tried to save her, but the Avox gestures that Katniss would only have ended up like her. Katniss helps her clean up, then goes to sleep. The next morning, Katniss meets with Cinna.
Later, the two learn President Snow considered their actions to be an act of rebellion against the Capitol. After their last interview, in which the two continue to affect their romantic feelings for one another, Peeta comes to the realization Katniss has staged her love for him all along.
At times she's convinced that he's scheming, deceiving her and the others; at other times, she thinks that he might be acting out of kindness, which is more dangerous to her since she knows she won't be able to kill a kind Peeta Mellark. The image of the dandelion returns.
Katniss is at first so angry with Peeta for his comments, believing that he made her look weak, that when they get off on floor 12, she shoves him. He knocks an urn over, shattering it, and then falls and cuts his hands on the shards.
As they discuss District 12, Peeta spirals out of control, blaming Katniss for the district's destruction and accusing her of being a mutt created by the Capitol to use against everyone. Heartbroken, Katniss tells Haymitch and Plutarch that she can't stay in District 13 anymore.
These wolf-like mutts are not just murderous creatures created to kill those remaining but horrific monsters that resemble the now-dead tributes. The wolf-like mutts act as a physical representation of how the remaining tributes have themselves become murderous monsters throughout the course of the game.
He loved his mentor, Mags, like family, and had to watch while she sacrificed herself in the arena to save him, Katniss, and Peeta. What's more, Mags had already sacrificed herself just to be in the arena, by taking the place of Annie, the woman Finnick loves. By the end of the Games, Finnick is seriously depressed.
During the supposed execution of Snow, she instead shoots Coin, due to her being responsible for Prim's death. She then attempts to kill herself with the suicide pill attached to her uniform, but Peeta stops her.
However, each tesserae they sign up for puts another slip with their name in the reaping ball. It is also cumulative, so Katniss Everdeen, when she was sixteen, had her name put in the glass ball twenty times.

When Katniss comes home to District 12, Gale immediately confesses his love for Katniss, and she realizes she might have feelings for him, too — but she can't explore them, because she has to continue her fake relationship with Peeta or else her entire family, including “cousin Gale,” will be killed.
Katniss rarely sings because it reminds her of her father, but she now remembers a morbid song that her father taught her: “The Hanging Tree.” This moment in the story is significant in multiple ways.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
What secret does Peeta reveal at the end of his interview?
In Chapter 9, as Caesar Flickerman interviews Peeta before the Games, Peeta reveals to Caesar and all of Panem that he's in love with Katniss. Peeta's revelation sets in motion the storyline of him and Katniss as ill-fated lovers that carries on throughout the Games.
In the session with Haymitch, Katniss is coached on her interview skills with little to no luck. Katniss is hostile, angry, and has trouble talking about herself or her family. Haymitch says she has about as much charm "as a dead slug" (9.27). Haymitch coaches her to act humble.
